2020.09.25 07:44 Withheld_BY_Duress Swirling The Drain

FedEx is dying a slow death. Their ground service has been forced to just a few large accounts and only by virtue of low balling freight charges.
I live in a very large community (~2400 units) that is 3 miles South of one of the largest cities in the US. The community has been unchanged for 80 years, all residences have individual addresses. For some reason FedEx sometimes states they can't deliver due to the business is closed (delivery is to a private residence and no signature is required) or the can't find the address. So every time this takes place of course I call the vendor who then contacts FedEx. All this customer service intervention costs money.
So here's my point. As the consumer guess who ultimately is paying the bills at FedEx and for all the unnecessary human time? I'll give you a hint: It shows up on my credit card. This is total disregard by FedEx to uphold the contract they ultimately have with me the consumer. Missed delivery dates, lost shipments happen more often than not. Every time this happens it's an inconvenience to me and takes my time and intervention to fix FedEx's problem.
Well what options does that leave me? I would also like to add that UPS, USPS, and Amazon Prime has no problem honor the delivery contracts that I have paid for.
So tomorrow I will email Walmart in this instance to inform them that I will no longer do any on-line business with them as long as they are using FedEx as their shipper for me. There are too many vendor alternatives that FedEx isn't even an option for shipping, hence my title. How do you think Walmart will react to feedback like that?
So their employees can come here and whine about all the problems but in the end who do you think suffers for no good reason? FedEx might temporarily look healthy to the shareholders for the moment but that won't last. Their decaying fleet of vehicles should give them a clue of what's really going on.

2020.09.25 07:07 annehenrietta Is it me or is there a surge of christian fundamentalists?

So I live in Mexico, a predominately catholic country, but until recently I always felt that for most Mexicans being a catholic was little more than social and cultural convention. Seldom did I encounter hardcore church goers. I mean when I was a teenager I’d attend the 8 PM service with my friends every Sunday only because it was THE meet-up spot to run into cute girls who basically were there for the exact same reason. I even signed up for a kind of crash course to be confirmed as a catholic only because it would get me out of school for a couple of days, and indeed many people I know did the same. Every sacred date for catholics was a free pass to hang out and ditch classes, and so on. Still, I never perceived it other than casual occurrences and a normal part of growing up Mexican. I know most of my close friends share a similar view and had almost identical experiences growing up. None of us went back to church after the mandatory services we had to endure in high school (most private schools are catholic), except to attend a wake or a funeral, you know, ‘cause grannies get sad if they don’t see you at church when some random third cousin of theirs kicks the bucket.
Anyway, my point is a lot of us here grow up catholic, but aren’t, not really. However more and more do I see an aggressive catholic/christian agenda being pushed. Bigotry is on the rise, the abandonment of common sense and freedom of thought is becoming apparent. I have a hard time describing it but I suppose what frightens me is seeing people I know, even some I cared for or respected, wilfully complying with dogma, submitting too literally to the moral guidelines church provides, shunning their friends for not doing the same. Downright frustrating I must say, because as many of you know, there’s no dialogue to be had there. I feel once they’ve embarked on that path chances are they won’t challenge their beliefs.
Bottom line is these are things as I perceive them, but does anyone feel the same way? Are christians bringing back their greatest hits from the Middle Ages?
Hail thyselves homies!

Frequently Asked Questions below!
A longer version of the subreddit rules is here.
For questions specifically concerning bootlegs or vendor legitimacy, please ask in the Bootleg Megathread.
NSFW & Spoiler Guidelines
  • For Self Posts: include a bolded NSFW note next to links in that post.
  • For Links to sites/images: If the figure is NSFW, or the website has any NSFW content (including ads) be sure to tag your post NSFW and use the appropriate link flair.
Bootlegs
Any collection posts containing bootlegs, comments advocating buying bootlegs, or links to sites selling bootlegs, recasts, or unlicensed merchandise will be removed.
People often ask about the legitimacy and/or safety of a number of websites which sell large resin statues. The more commonly-asked of those deal primarily in resins from studios which do not have a license from the Japanese IP holders to produce merchandise. Therefore links to those sites are not permitted here. Another sign is if MyFigureCollection doesn't list the either the statue, its manufacturer, or the shop it's being sold on.

Buying & Shipping

1. What’s the best place to buy my anime figures from?
That’s going to depend a lot on what works for you, but most people around here buy them from Amiami, Big in Japan, Hobby Search, HobbyLink Japan, or Tokyo Otaku Mode. If none of those work for you for whatever reason, there’s a list of reputable retailers in the sidebar that you can check out at any time. Be extra careful when ordering figures from websites like Amazon or ebay, as there are a lot of bootlegs on those sites. Don’t be afraid to ask in our Bootleg Megathread if you’re unsure.
2. What differences are there between the shipping options I get from most Japanese shops?
Below is a rundown of the main shipping choices you’ll get at most retailers. Keep in mind that if an order is large enough you will be forced to use one of the more expensive options, as SAL shipments have lower size and weight restrictions.
  • Unregistered SAL: Sometimes referred to as uSAL, is usually the cheapest method. It does not come with any tracking or insurance. Usually takes up 2-4 weeks for delivery.
  • Registered SAL: Sometimes referred to as rSAL, is insured for the declared value up to 6,000 yen. It comes with a tracking number and usually takes 2-4 weeks for delivery.
  • EMS: This method of shipping is much faster than either SAL options, usually arriving within a week of shipment. EMS shipments are insured for the declared value up to 2,000,000 yen.
  • Airmail
  • E-packet
  • Surface: Shops don't offer this very often. It's an actual cargo ship and slow as a result.
  • DHL: Becoming more available as an alternative to EMS on AmiAmi and other sites. Can be less expensive than EMS and of comparable speed, but may be more reliant on the specific geographical area being shipped to. Offers their own tracking.
3. I placed two+ orders for figures at different times. Will my items be shipped together, or will I have to pay shipping twice?
Most shops will ask you to pay shipping on a per-order basis, but here are some that will allow combined shipping:
  • Amiami: You can combine orders here, as long as the orders ship in the same month. It doesn’t matter if the item is new or preowned. Any preorders that are set for that month can also be combined with other orders for that month. However, be aware that if the preorder gets delayed, Amiami will remove that item from that month’s shipment and place it on a new order. To combine orders on Amiami, use the “Combine Orders” feature under “My Account”.
  • Hobby Search: Hobby Search will let you combine orders that release in the same month, but you cannot combine in stock items with preorders. If you want to combine multiple preorders, or multiple in stock items, you can do so using the “Order Recombination” feature on your account page.
  • HobbyLink Japan: At HLJ, you have the option to send paid orders to their “Private Warehouse”, where you can store them for up to 2 months. When you’re ready to ship the items, you simply select which items to ship and HLJ will combine them into one shipment for you. To use this, just select the “Private Warehouse” option as shipping when you order.
  • GSC Web Shop: Here you’ll pay a flat 2,000 yen fee per order. It doesn’t matter how many items you put in your order, or how many different months the items release in. They will charge you 2,000 yen and ship all items as they release. The exception to this rule is their Wonder Festival exclusive items. Those can only be placed in the same order as other Wonder Festival items.
If you’re unsure about whether or not a shop we haven’t listed will combine your orders, please refer to their individual FAQ’s.
4. When will I get charged for my preorder?
Most Japanese shops charge you once the item is in stock and ready for shipment. When that happens, they will send you an email asking for payment. Some shops (mostly overseas ones), will allow you to pay for the item up front though, if you’d like. A few with that option are:
  • Big in Japan (Japanese store)
  • Tokyo Otaku Mode
  • Anime Island
  • Crunchyroll
Keep in mind that overseas stores will likely get the figure a few months after Japanese ones, so pay attention to the release date stated on the website you are buying from so as to avoid that confusion.
5. Should I expect to pay customs fees when importing figures?
That depends on where you live. Here’s a quick rundown:
  • Australia: 10% GST is now assessed up front.
  • Canada: Minimum declared value for charges is around CAD$20 for regular shipments, and CAD$60 for gifts (gifting something only seems to lower the declared value by about CAD$40, not deplete it completely). When using Amiami, try their Small Air Packet option. It comes with tracking, gets there in about the same time as EMS, and is better at avoiding customs.
  • Europe: Using EMS raises your chance of getting charged for customs. SAL can still avoid customs in some countries, but generally gets checked in the UK now if the items are above the threshold. Amiami offers a shipping service called “Small Air Packet” that is really good for avoiding customs when you are only shipping one or two figures. Small Air Packet usually takes about the same amount of time as EMS, and still comes with tracking. The minimum declared value for customs charges in the Europe is pretty low- around £15 (£36 for gifts) / €20.
  • Mexico: Minimum declared value for customs fees is USD$300 for shipments by post, and USD$50 for shipments by courier.
  • United States: A shipment has to have a declared value of USD$2,000 before customs starts hitting you with fees, so you most likely won’t have to worry about them at all.
6. The figure I want is an exclusive, how do I go about ordering one outside of Japan?
You have three options for this:
A. Big in Japan is known to stock exclusive figures and ship to other countries. Usually the price is higher because they build in their proxy fees, but it’s easier than worrying about using a forwarder or proxy service. If you live in the US, Crunchyroll, Right Stuf, and Tokyo Otaku Mode also get exclusives sometimes, but out of the states the shipping can get expensive.
B. Forwarding Services: A forwarder is someone who you ship an exclusive item to so that they can forward the package on to you, usually for a flat fee + shipping. When using a forwarder you still make the purchase yourself, and enter their address into the shipping field. When the box arrives at the forwarder they will then stick your address onto the package and send it on its way.
Some popular forwarders are:
Be sure to read each sites instructions on forwarding carefully!
C. Proxy Services: With a proxy, you tell them what the item you’re looking for is and they will purchase it in your stead. This is handy for when a company doesn’t accept foreign credit cards, or you’re having trouble navigating a Japanese website.
Some popular proxies are:
Again, be sure you thoroughly read through each sites proxy instructions.
7. I see a bunch of really cheap figures that ship from China on ebay. Are those okay to buy?
Generally, no. They’re most likely bootlegs. If you want a second opinion on that, feel free to ask in the Bootleg Megathread that’s always stickied at the top of the sub.
8. What’s a bootleg, and how can I avoid buying them?
A bootleg is a counterfeit figure often made using rejected molds of the official product. They are usually priced significantly lower than the genuine article, and in order to make their profit, bootleggers use lower quality materials and have less attention to detail- resulting in a substandard figure.
The Bootleg Megathread that I mentioned in question 7 is a great tool to avoid buying any bootlegs. It has a few tips and tricks to avoiding them to begin with, and a few more on how to spot them if you’re worried you might already own one.
9. Does anyone know when figure X is going to be released? How do I know if it was delayed?
My Figure Collection (sometimes referred to as MFC) does an excellent job of staying on top of information like release dates and delays. If you’re curious about an upcoming figures release date, check there first. This information can be found directly under the “Releases” section on a figure’s entry. If you only see a month and a year in that section, it means the release date has not yet been announced by the manufacturer, and there is still a chance the figure could be delayed.
If you make an account on MFC you can also subscribe to comments, changes, and pictures via a checkbox on the right hand side of a figure’s listing. Subscribing to any of these things will allow MFC to send you an email anytime the subscription in question updates. Subscribing to “changes” is a great way to keep up with release dates and delays, among other things.
10. The figure I want is long sold out at normal retailers! What’s the best place to pick it up in the aftermarket?
A list of reputable retailers can be found under the “Shops” section of the /AnimeFigures sidebar. They all sell legitimate products, and many of them also sell figures second hand. However, the most frequently suggested second hand sites are Mandarake and Amiami- who has a preowned section that they update every night save Sundays and Japanese holidays around 1PM JST and again around 6PM JST.
AmiAmi grades their pre-owned items on a letter scale. The general consensus from buyers is that their ratings are conservative, so unless the item and/or packaging is specifically indicated as having significant flaws, pre-owned items from them are usually in at least as good a condition as their rating suggests.
Note: When you search Mandarake, you’ll get the best results by using the Japanese characters for whatever you are searching. If you don’t know them, you can find them on MFC by clicking on any of the “details” in that figure’s listing.
11. Amiami has a figure I’m interested in labeled as “For sale in Japan only”. Does this mean I can’t order it without a proxy or forwarder?
No, you can still order it. Amiami’s English site has that warning on many items, and it’s mostly meant to inform you that this product was made for a Japanese market, and as such, will have Japanese speaking/writing in it- so don’t expect any instructions to be in English. If Amiami doesn’t want foreigners buying a certain product, they won’t even list it on their English site.

Displaying Your Figures

12. What display cases do you recommend?
If you live near an Ikea try out one of these:
*If you decided on a Detolf, you might find that there is a lot of wasted space. Here are a few tutorials on raising the shelves or and adding extra ones in.
If you don’t live near an Ikea, Amazon has a few display options, though they are more expensive. Also keep an eye on your local Craigslist (or your country’s equivalent) and stores near you that are closing up.
13. What lighting do you guys recommend?
Ikea’s Dioder LED strips are often suggested. They come in white or muti-colored.
Most hardware stores carry something similar though, if you don’t live by an Ikea. Just make sure that the lights don’t get too hot!
14. What are those clear plastic boxes that I see under everyone’s figures in their collection posts, and where can I get them?
Those are called risers. Most of us use standard acrylic risers like these. Some other, easy to find things that have been suggested are:
Check your local hobby store for the first 2 options, or your local hardware store if you want to make your own.
Another common suggestion is to visit The Container Store if you have one near you. They have a lot of things to choose from that can suit a variety of needs. Be sure to check out their standard acrylic risers, their Amac boxes, and the various display cases they sell (baseball cases, mini car cases. hockey puck cases, etc).
15. Should I keep my figures sealed?
That is, of course, up to you really, but here are a few things to keep in mind when debating this question:
  • Keeping it sealed can actually damage your figure. PVC figures usually have something called plasticizer in them, and that plasticizer needs to be able to breath. If a PVC figure isn’t exposed to oxygen, after a period of time the plasticizer starts to break down and form a sticky substance on the surface of the figure. Simply opening your figures and taking them out of the box prevents this from happening. If you happen to find plasticizer goo on one of your figures, Kahotan has a handy guide for dealing with it.
  • Unlike some other figure markets, keeping an anime figure sealed won’t raise its value by a whole lot. In fact, because of the plasticizer problem mentioned above, your figure could actually be in better condition if you open it versus keeping it sealed.

Finding the Right Figure(s) for You

16. There are so many figure companies! Who makes good figures?!
Obviously this is a very subjective question, but as a general starting point, here are a few well renowned figure companies:
  • Alter
  • Max Factory
  • Good Smile Company
  • Kotobukiya (usually hit or miss for people. Use your best judgement based off of the prototype)
  • Aquamarine
  • Flare
  • Stronger
17. I really love “series X / character X”- how can I check if any figures were ever made for it?
My Figure Collection can be your best friend here. Simply do a search on the name of the series or character using the search bar located at the top right of the screen, and all associated figures pop up!
Alternatively, if you’re looking at a figure’s MFC entry, most of the text under the “Details” section can be clicked on and used to run a search.
18. How can I commission a custom figure?
None of the major figure companies (Alter, Kotobukiya, Good Smile Company, etc.) will take a commission for a single figure. This thread has a few websites in it that you can check out, or you can look into garage kits. Some kit painters would be willing to resculpt, frankenstein together, or otherwise modify kits for the right price.
If you're looking for help completing a garage kit, /brushforhire may be useful.

Keeping Up with New Announcements

19. How can I keep up with figure news (announcements, updates, etc.)?
Most people use a MFC combined with any or all of the following news sites:
To use MFC for this I’ll quote question #9.
Most companies have one or more Twitter accounts. Some examples: Good Smile Company sales, Good Smile's USA branch, Max Factory, AmiAmi Hobby News.
20. Everyone’s excited about something called Wonfes….. what the heck is that?!
WonFes (short for Wonder Festival) is a biannual figure expo where many figure producers (both large and small) show off new sculpts and updates to figures already under way. Most companies save their most exciting announcements for WonFes, so we all look forward to the expo whenever it rolls around! Winter Wonder Festival is usually held in February, while Summer Wonder Festival is usually in July. The event has also spread to Shanghai, in the late spring.
21. One or two (or 15) figures were announced at WonFes that I’m really excited about! How can I keep track of their progress once the event is over?
MFC is always really quick about getting new WonFes announcements (or any others throughout the year, for that matter) listed in their database, so we suggest using that. To find a figure from the event you can search any number of things, including the name of the character or the name of the show. You can also use the tag search to search “WonderFestival 20xx_[season]” to see all items announced at that event.

2020.09.24 23:03 badpauly Significant Activist Hedge Fund Activity (Last 7 Days)

These are the latest Schedule 13D forms filed by activist investors in the last 7 days. Activist investors are investors that make an investment with the intention of influencing management in some way. There is evidence that following activist investors into investments can generate excess returns. Schedule 13G forms, in contrast, are filed by significant investors with no intention of influencing management (such as Index funds).
There is always a lot of interest in insider trades, but what a lot of people probably don't realize is that hedge fund activity is probably more predictive of future returns than insider activity. The reason is that hedge funds (a) have large research budgets, and (b) have a choice where to put their money. In contract, insiders have no choice where to put their money, but only when to time their transactions.

2020.09.24 21:59 Qalmahdari Karachi needs at least 15,000 buses to cater to a population of more than 20 million. Over 290 public transport routes have been closed leaving only 79 operational routes for traffic.

Over the past decade, the population of Karachi has grown exponentially, which naturally created the need to upgrade its transportation system. To that end, the city’s transport sector saw both positive and negative developments. On a government level, a big-bus service was added to the transport infrastructure, while on the other hand, citizens had to face a lot of problems because public transport was reduced to a fleet of 4,000 buses.
According to an estimate, Karachi needs at least 15,000 buses to cater to a population of more than 20 million. Over 290 public transport routes have been closed leaving only 79 operational routes for traffic. Due to the negligence of the provincial government, the fares of public transport have risen manifold due to which people belonging to the working and underprivileged class, together with women and students, have to face immense difficulties.
Innovations and developments
Even though the traditional public transport system of Karachi generally worsened over the past 10 years, it is worth mentioning that some positive developments also took place in the city in the form of local and foreign investments in the transport sector. The introduction of internet-assisted transport services, for instance, offered a lot of convenience to the citizens of Karachi as they could now book bikes, rickshaws, cars and small buses online.
The second-biggest development in the transport sector was the launch of a mass-transit system in Karachi - a project that had been on the cards for the past forty years. In 2010, the bus rapid transport (BRT) system finally started materialising and its construction on two corridors began.
Undue delays
Over the years, three public transport schemes were formulated at the state level. With the financial support of Rs2.5 billion from the federal government, there had been plans to introduce 4,000 CNG buses in Karachi under the Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Scheme. The plan to launch another 1,000 new air-conditioned buses in collaboration with a private company was also in the pipeline.
However, both of the projects were red-taped due to the negligence of the Sindh government. However, another project for 1,000 buses signed with the Daewoo Company is underway. Although the buses under the project were supposed to arrive in Karachi by May 2019, a rise in the price of the dollar, together with other administrative reasons, caused undue delays.
Outdated buses and closed routes
Per a survey conducted by The Express Tribune, the public buses which are currently in use are very old, with many of them older than 40 years. The minibuses and coaches have surpassed their functional life and are running without fitness certificates. According to transporters, as many as 10,000 public buses were operational until the early 2000s. However, the illegal nine-seat and 12-seat Qingqi rickshaws were allowed on the roads due to which the public transport system started facing a drastic decline. To top it all off, gas-load shedding, a surge in CNG prices and hikes in diesel rates also hampered the public transport system to a great extent.
The Sindh transport department, Regional Transport Authority and other organisations do not have accurate data on the number of operational public transport vehicles in the city. However, it is estimated that there are currently only 4,000 public transport carriers operating in Karachi, with only 400 big buses and 3,500 minibuses and coaches. There are a total of 60 routes for big buses out of which 47 are closed and only 13 are operational. The total number of bus routes is 236 of which 191 routes are closed. Mini-buses are operating on 25 routes, while coaches have a total of 75 routes including 21 operational and 54 non-operational ones.
Rising transportation fares
In 2018, public transport owners increased transportation fares without the approval of the government. The buses have started charging Rs15 to Rs30 from passengers, while fares for minibuses cost up to Rs20 to Rs40. Similarly, coach owners charge Rs20 to Rs50 per passenger for a one-way trip. Transporters maintain that due to an increase in fuel prices and illegal transportation of rickshaws, the number of passengers using public transport has considerably reduced, causing serious monetary losses.
This is the first time in the history of Karachi that fares have been increased without a notification from the Sindh government. Despite protest from the public, the provincial government acted as a silent spectator to the violation.
The Sindh government has no concrete plans for improving the transportation system in Karachi even though there is huge potential for investment in the sector. To make for the gap, private online transport companies like Bykea, Uber, Careem, SWVL and Airlift have attracted investments in the sector. The Sindh government has not facilitated these companies in any form, while the provincial transport department has maintained that there is no law to regularise these companies. However, the provincial government has recently drafted a law has to regularise such companies which would be sent to the assembly for approval.
A ray of hope
The construction of the much-awaited mass transit system in Karachi, together with the revitalisation of the Karachi Circular Railway has been underway for decades. On the request of the Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif ordered to connect the Karachi Circular Railway with the China Pakistan Economic Corridor in 2017 and issued directives to hand over the project to the Sindh government. However, no progress has been made in this regard.
Nonetheless, both the Sindh and the federal government deserve a pat on the back for rapidly starting the construction of the BRT system and its two corridors but work on both of the projects is slow-paced owing to various reasons but their expected completion date is December 2020 after which the bus service will start.

2020.09.24 20:46 fineprintdata DeJoy's Stocks vs. the 2020 Election

I’ve been trying to understand the web of financial interests surrounding Postmaster DeJoy. Here’s what I’ve got so far. A full graphic of his history with XPO is here, along with the following writeup.

TL:DR Postmaster DeJoy has a massive (187 to 1) conflict-of-interest between his stock in his ex-company, XPO Logistics, and his role as head of the Post Office. The conflict is so massive that his best financial interest is to stay in power as long as possible so in order to weaken the Post Office where it competes with XPO and/or increase Post Office outsourcing for services that XPO provides.
  1. The $-leverage-gap between DeJoy’s stock in his former company, XPO (estimated at $57 million on 9/18) and his annual salary as Postmaster General ($303,460) is 187 to 1.
  2. In the first 10 weeks of DeJoy appointment, USPS payments to XPO have increased by 412% over the same time period last year (although this contract does pre-date DeJoy's appointment, it came after he was floated as a replacement to Postmaster Brennan and after DeJoy's chief advocate, John Barger, was named to head the search process. ).
  3. Since DeJoy’s appointment, 7% of all First-Class mail has been delayed and 13% of the country's mail-sorting machines have been scheduled for decommission before the election.
  4. DeJoy’s changes have slowed mail, weakened confidence in the USPS, and decreased access to voting-by-mail. With a clear Democratic dependence on voting-by-mail, these policies increase the likelihood that Trump wins, so that DeJoy can weaken the USPS as a competitor to XPO and increase USPS outsourcing to XPO.
I looked at three primary sources to compile information about Postmaster General DeJoy’s financial interests. These are SEC insider trading filings as relates to his position as an executive at XPO, nonprofit 501c(3) disclosure filings for the DeJoy Wos Family Foundation, and the EIGA Annual Financial Disclosures and Periodic Transaction Reports for DeJoy and his immediate family.
### Background
Louis DeJoy is a former logistics executive and Trump campaign megadonor. He was confirmed as the 75th Postmaster General earlier this year, assuming the position on June 16, 2020. His wife, Aldona Wos, had served as Ambassador to Estonia under George W. Bush and had been considered for the position of Ambassador to Canada. Since DeJoy’s confirmation, concerns about conflicts of interest between his personal investments and USPS policy have grown, leading to inquiries by both the House Oversight Committee and Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee. Earlier this month, the House opened a separate investigation of DeJoy’s alleged campaign finance violations involving his former company, New Breed Logistics.
### XPO Logistics
Louis DeJoy and his wife, Aldona Wos, have an estimated $56 million stake in XPO Logistics, the multinational company that DeJoy helped run and a direct beneficiary of the new policies DeJoy enacted at the Postal Service. For context, as of late 2019, the couple have a combined net worth between $93 and $314 million, with income between $6 to $31 million. In other words, they have tied between 18 and 60 percent of their wealth to the financial success of a company that DeJoy regulates.
DeJoy ran his family company, New Breed Logistics, with his brothers from 1983 to 2014. He then sold New Breed to XPO Logistics for $615 million in the summer of 2014. As part of the deal, DeJoy was appointed President of XPO’s North America & Asia-Pacific supply chain business, due to his expertise in supply chain operations. He also agreed to purchase $30 million worth of restricted XPO shares, evenly divided between the pre-merger ($26.03) and post-merger ($32.45) share price. In December of 2015, DeJoy suddenly retired as President and joined the Board of XPO. In his ownership filings as a member of the board, we can only find evidence of him owning ~$15 million in XPO stock. It’s unclear whether the other $15 million stock purchase was ever executed, and if not, why.
Cross-referencing DeJoy’s SEC ownership filings and his exercised XPO options, we estimate that he currently owns 650,000 shares of XPO, valued at $56.8 million on September 18th. In contrast, DeJoy makes $303,460 annually as Postmaster General. As such, a change in XPO’s stock price of just 47 cents is the equivalent of his annual salary. On September 1st of this year, for example, DeJoy made more than four times his annual salary in total capital gains on his XPO stock, adding around $1,287,000 to his net worth in a single day.
As part of their delivery network, the Post Office contracts long-haul shipping jobs to a large number of private contractors, including XPO. While this does not represent the largest revenue stream for XPO, it does receive millions of dollars in federal contracts every year. Since DeJoy’s appointment, XPO has seen a 412% year over year increase in payments from these contracts, from $3.4 million over the same time period last year to $14 million.
### Power Through USPS Policy Changes
DeJoy’s policies have delayed 7 percent of all first-class mail. He has ordered the removal of 13% of all sorting machines used to help process mail-in ballots, and worries persist regarding the Postal Service’s ability to handle the expected volume of vote by mail ballots. Impeding the ability of the Postal Service to process mail-in ballots when evidence suggests that Democrats are vastly more likely to cast them would undoubtedly help Trump win reelection.
DeJoy’s policies have already degraded confidence in the Postal Service. Indeed, at least 21 states plan to sue the Postal Service over DeJoy’s changes. Even a small decrease in voter turnout or ballot delivery could affect electoral outcomes, often decided by a few swing states. A difference of around 100,000 votes in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin would have changed the outcome of the 2016 election. With around one third of Americans planning to vote by mail, any interruption to the postal service could cause vote counting delays or prevent votes from being counted. In other words, in 2020, whoever controls the mail, controls the elections.

2020.09.24 15:14 vetamit Medical Marijuana Implementation in the State of Arizona

I wouldn't be a good attorney unless I prefaced this article with a few disclaimers: 1) Marijuana is still a controlled schedule I substance and is illegal in the eyes of the Federal Government of the United States; 2) This article is not to be construed as legal advice, nor is intended to take the place of the advice of an attorney, and you should consult with an attorney before taking any actions in furtherance of the subject matter of this article. Ok, let's begin.
In the month of November, the State of Arizona passed Proposition 203, which would exempt certain people from controlled substances laws in the State of Arizona. However, it will still take some time before medical marijuana is implemented as policy in Arizona. The Arizona Department of Health Services has released a proposed timeline for the drafting of the rules surrounding the implementation of Proposition 203. So far, these are the important time periods that should be paid close attention to:
December 17, 2010: The first draft of the medical marijuana rules should be released and made available for comment on this date.
January 7, 2011: This will be the deadline for public comment on the first draft of rules mentioned above.
January 31, 2011: The second draft of the rules will be released on this date. Once again, it will be available for informal comment as in the draft referred to above.
February 21 to March 18, 2011: More formal public hearings will be held about the proposed rules at this time, after which the final rules will be submitted to the Secretary of State and made public on the Office of Administrative Rules website.
April 2011: The medical marijuana rules will go into effect and be published in the Arizona Administrative Register.
It is important that at all times throughout the consultation process, interested parties submit briefs and/or make oral presentations when permitted. Groups with interests contrary to those of medical marijuana advocates may also be making presentations, and may convince the State to unnecessarily restrict the substance or those who may qualify to access it if there is no voice to advocate in favor of patients' rights.
Some key points about Proposition 203's effects
-Physicians may prescribe medical marijuana for their patients under certain conditions. "Physician" is not defined in a way limited to normal medical doctors. Osteopaths licensed under Title 32, Chapter 17; naturopaths licensed under Title 32, Chapter 14; and homeopaths licensed under Title 32, Chapter 29 may all be eligible to recommend marijuana for their patients.
-In order to be prescribed medical marijuana, a person must be a "qualifying patient." A qualifying patient is defined as someone who has been diagnosed by a "physician" (as defined above) as having a "debilitating medical condition."
-Debilitating medical conditions include: • Cancer, glaucoma, HIV positive status, AIDS, hepatitis C, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Crohn's disease, or agitation of Alzheimer's disease or the treatment of these conditions. • A chronic or debilitating disease or medical condition or its treatment that produces one or more of the following: Cachexia or wasting syndrome; severe and chronic pain; severe nausea; seizures, including those characteristic of epilepsy; or severe and persistent muscle spasms, including those characteristic of multiple sclerosis. • Any other medical condition or its treatment added by the Department of Health Services pursuant to Section 36-2801.01.
This last qualifying condition is underlined because it is vitally important during the rulemaking process. Although Proposition 203 allows for the public to petition the Department of Health Services to exercise its discretion to add conditions under this section, bureaucracy is notoriously difficult to get to change any law. The initial discretionary rules for additional treatments could be exercised during the public consultations that occur between December and March, though this is not certain.
It is therefore important that, in the event that the addition of medical conditions is considered during the consultations, any stakeholder who wishes for a medical condition not listed in the first two bulleted items above to lobby during the public consultation periods for the Department to add the additional medical condition to the list of debilitating medical conditions. In order to increase the prestige of any presentations made to justify adding medical conditions under Section 36-2801.01, it may be helpful to solicit the testimony of sympathetic Arizona-licensed medical doctors who can testify on paper and at the public hearings about why the proposed condition should be added. Documents showing that other jurisdictions, both in the United States and elsewhere, currently use marijuana as a treatment for the proposed condition may be helpful, as would medical journals on the subject.
It should be remembered that despite his cheery YouTube videos about the medical marijuana rule drafting process, Director of Health Services Will Humble wrote a submission in opposition to the passing of Proposition 203. He did so on the grounds that the FDA does not test the drug, and even though the federal government's anti-marijuana policy is well-known it should not be relied on as an authority for unbiased medical marijuana research. There is no reason to believe that Director Humble will be any less inclined to obstruct the use of medical marijuana during the rulemaking stage, and all proponents of medical marijuana should be sure to make their voices heard at the consultations to prevent the obstruction of the intent of Proposition 203.
Extent of Rulemaking during Consultations
There are other provisions in Proposition 203 which will be discussed during the initial rulemaking process, and they will probably be the main focus of the consultations. The consultations will create rules: • Governing the manner in which the Department of Health Services will accept the petitions from the public previously mentioned, regarding the addition of medical conditions to the list of the already enshrined debilitating medical conditions. • Establishing the form and content of registration and renewal applications submitted under the medical marijuana law. • Governing the manner in which the Department will consider applications for and renewals of medical marijuana ID cards. • Governing the various aspects around the newly legalized nonprofit medical marijuana dispensaries, including recordkeeping, security, oversight, and other requirements. • Establishing the fees for patient applications and medical marijuana dispensary applications.
The most crucial part of the consultation period will be regarding the rules governing the establishment and oversight of medical marijuana dispensaries. If interest groups lobby the Department to make the recordkeeping, security, oversight, and other requirements around dispensaries too restrictive, it will have the effect of reducing the availability of medical marijuana to patients and driving up the price of medical marijuana due to the lack of supply. It could simply become too costly to comply with all of the regulations.
During this stage, it is important that stakeholders-particularly medical marijuana dispensaries from out-of-state, and perhaps pharmacists with a bit of economic knowledge-submit briefs explaining why certain proposed rules may have a negative effect on the patients this Proposition is supposed to help. The proposed rules have not come out yet, but when they do, they should be closely scrutinized for the possible negative impact that unnecessarily tough security and recordkeeping on nonprofit dispensaries might have on patients.
The other major factor in the rulemaking will have to do with the fees. The Department will be setting fees for medical marijuana dispensaries during the consultation period. Proposition 203 provides that the fees may not exceed $5,000 per initial application, and $1,000 per renewal. However, with some lobbying during the public consultation, it is possible that the actual fees will be much less since these are simply the maximum that the Department may charge.
Discrimination against Medical Marijuana Users
Under Proposition 203, discrimination against medical marijuana users will be prohibited in certain circumstances. Based on our analysis, a person may not:
• As a school or landlord, refuse to enroll someone or otherwise penalize them solely for their status as a medical marijuana cardholder, unless not doing so would result in the loss of a monetary or licensing related benefit under federal law or regulations. • As an employer, discriminate against hiring someone, or terminate them or impose any conditions on them because they are a medical marijuana cardholder, unless not doing so would result in the loss of a monetary or licensing related benefit under federal law or regulations. Employers may still terminate employees if the employee is in possession of or impaired by marijuana on the premises of the place of employment or during the hours of employment. • As a medical care provider, discriminate against a cardholder, including in matters of organ transplants. Medical marijuana must be treated as any other medication prescribed by a physician. • Be prevented, as a cardholder, from having visitation custody or visitation or parenting time with a minor, unless the cardholder's behavior "creates an unreasonable danger to the safety of the minor as established by clear and convincing evidence." Although there are certain prohibitions on discrimination, there are also provisions which permit discrimination against medical marijuana cardholders: • Government medical assistance programs and private health insurers are not required to reimburse a person for their medical marijuana use. • Nobody who possesses property, including business owners, is required to allow medical marijuana on their premises (this seemingly includes landlords who, although they cannot refuse tenants based on their being a cardholder, are permitted to prevent cardholders from bringing marijuana onto the landlord's property). • Employers are not required to allow cardholders to be under the influence of or ingest marijuana while working, though the presence of marijuana in the body which is not of a sufficient concentration to cause impairment does not establish being under the influence of it.
Rules Related to the Establishment of Dispensaries
Although the final rules around security, recordkeeping, and other requirements for medical marijuana dispensaries will not be established until April 2011, there are certain requirements which are enshrined in Proposition 203 itself and can be known ahead of the time that the final rules come out. These minimal requirements may not be as restrictive as the final requirements which are published in April 2011.
• Medical marijuana dispensaries must be nonprofit. They must have bylaws which preserve their nonprofit nature, though they need not be considered tax-exempt by the IRS, nor must they be incorporated. • The operating documents of the dispensaries must include provisions for the oversight of the dispensary and for accurate recordkeeping. • The dispensary must have a single secure entrance and must implement appropriate security measures to deter and prevent the theft of marijuana and unauthorized access to areas containing marijuana. • A dispensary must not acquire, possess, cultivate, manufacture, deliver, transfer, transport, supply, or dispense marijuana for any purpose other than providing it directly to a cardholder or to a registered caregiver for the cardholder. • All cultivation of marijuana must take place only at a locked, enclosed facility at a physical address provided to the Department of Health Services during the application process, and accessible only by dispensary agents registered with the Department. • A dispensary can acquire marijuana from a patient of their caregiver, but only if the patient or caregiver receives no compensation for it. • No consumption of marijuana is permitted on the property of the dispensary. • A dispensary is subject to reasonable inspection by the Department of Health Services. The Department must first give reasonable notice of the inspection to the dispensary.
Comparison to California's Medical Marijuana Law
The Arizona law is by no means the same as the law in California. There are certainly some differences between the two, though in some respects they are comparable. This is a comparative analysis of the two laws.
Similarities: Both laws, as a practical matter, allow for broad discretion on the part of a physician to prescribe marijuana to patients who suffer from pain. In the Arizona law, "severe and chronic pain" is the legislated standard. In the California law, any "chronic or persistent medical symptom" that substantially limits the life of the patient to conduct one or more major life activities as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, or that if not alleviated, will cause serious harm to the patient's physical or mental safety, qualifies. • Both laws have a number of illnesses which are automatically considered qualifying illnesses for the prescription of medical marijuana. These include, but are not limited to, AIDS, cachexia, cancer, glaucoma, persistent muscle spasms, seizures, and severe nausea. • Both laws require the use of an identification card by those who have been prescribed medical marijuana, after the cardholders have gone through an initial application process in which the use of the drug has been recommended by a physician. • Both states do not factor in the unusable portion of the marijuana plant in determining the maximum weight of marijuana that is permissible for possession by a cardholder.
Differences: Though the rules have not been finalized, the Arizona law appears as though it will be regulated on the state level and therefore uniform across Arizona. The California law, however, is regulated significantly on the municipal level, and therefore the rules around dispensaries can vary greatly from one municipality to the next. • The Arizona law provides a broader spectrum of people who are considered a "physician" for the purpose of prescribing medical marijuana. In California, only medical doctors and osteopaths are considered to be physicians. In Arizona, in addition to medical doctors and osteopaths, naturopaths and homeopaths will also be permitted to prescribe medical marijuana. • In California, patients or their caregivers may grow marijuana plants in lieu of using a medical marijuana dispensary. In Arizona, patients may only grow marijuana or designate someone else to do so in lieu of visiting a dispensary on the condition that there is no dispensary operating within 25 miles of the patient's home. • The maximum possession limit for marijuana in California is eight ounces per patient, whereas the limit is only 2.5 ounces per patient in Arizona.
-This is not meant to be legal advice and is provided purely as an analysis of the current legislation. You should consult with an attorney to discuss these matters. We are available for consultations for this matter by appointment only and via prepayment of the consultation fee.

2020.09.24 11:07 fulanka26 [EVENT] Iraq Begins Slowly Dismantling its State Owned Enterprises

The most important questions awaiting the next Iraqi government will be how to rein in public sector spending while simultaneously addressing the needs of 2.5 million unemployed Iraqis who urgently require jobs. With the national unemployment rate currently at 16 percent, there is consensus within policymaking circles that job creation needs to focus on the private sector rather than continuing to increase public employment.
One approach is to look at where major downsizing in unproductive state entities can quickly occur, to reduce inflated operating costs caused by overstaffing in order to create space for job creation in productive sectors. Among the biggest black holes within Iraqi public sector spending are the state-owned enterprises (SOE). Because they are considered self-financing entities, they are not incorporated into the annual federal budget, despite the fact that they are largely unprofitable and depend on soft loans from state-owned banks and special grants from the government budget in order to cover essential spending including salaries.

Background on the Iraqi State Owned Enterprises

Official data from 2015 suggests that there is a total of 176 SOEs nationwide, although several have merged in recent years. As of 2013, only 44 SOEs were profitable and this number has likely fallen since the collapse of oil prices in 2014. One of the major problems with lack of transparency is that publicly available employment numbers for the SOEs are scarce. This is in contrast to the line ministries and other state entities, whose employment figures are published on an annual basis within the federal budget. Data from 2010 suggests that there were 633,000 SOE employees (including contractors and daily wage earners) and this has likely increased since then.
The legal basis for SOEs is largely governed by the Public Companies’ Law no. 22 of 1997, which has been amended five times, most recently in 2015. Ownership of SOEs falls to 14 ministries, including the Ministry of Industry and Minerals, the Ministry of Electricity, the Ministry of Oil and the Ministry of Finance.

Prime Minister al-Khadami's Initiative

Prioritising the reform of state-owned enterprises has an added benefit beyond reducing public sector spending. SOEs are notorious for creating monopolies and crowding out private enterprise. By addressing overstaffing issues, many of these companies can be transformed into attractive investment opportunities through public-private partnerships, thereby stimulating private sector growth.
The goal of slowly dismantling the SOE is to reduce the shock to the economy of Iraq as well as begin to tailor these SOE's as worth investment for future foreign investors to take over.

Reorganising the State Owned Industries

The government strategy formulated by the Prime Minister’s Advisory Committee (PMAC) reiterates the need for a major overhaul that downsizes SOEs, transfers employees to their corresponding line ministries, establishes training centers to build capacity, and liquidates the unsalvageable SOEs.
Clauses within Law 22 will be invoked to immediately liquidate SOEs that have no potential for growth. This will consist of at least 20 SOEs including 5 of those owned by the Ministry of Defence.

Forcing early retirements

Iraq identifies some 181,000 employees over the age of 50 and with at least 15 years of service that could be offered early retirement, thereby cutting the workforce by over one quarter.
This is necessary to allow room for the Iraqi youth to be employed at the cost of elderly Iraqis who will no longer have a job in the private sector. The hope is that these elderly Iraqis begin starting their own businesses to keep themselves employed, creating a boom in small enterprise in Iraq.

Implementing More Transparency into SOE Spending

The Government of Iraq will begin to reclassify non-commercial SOEs so that they can be integrated into the public wage bill, ensuring greater transparency in budgetary spending. This will bring about greater government oversight and accountability to SOE's that survive the cut.
SOE's will also be required to now publish aggregate reports on financial performance, hire an annual third party independent auditor to audit their financial statements, and enhancing financial accountability by declaring financial assistance from the state instead of quietly loaning funds from the banks. An up-to-date breakdown of employment numbers within each SOE will also be reported as part of a comprehensive information system that also monitors and records off-budget financing from state-owned banks.

2020.09.24 03:16 RedditSuggestName 38 [F4M] - SoCal 4 SoCal - (locals only) LTR - I know my person is out there, we just have to find each other

TL;DR: BBW, loves Disneyland, TV and her pets (2 cats and 1 dog); looking for a fellow DDF guy, who wants to get married and have kids in a couple years too.
Locals only, because I do want to meet, COVID safe of course.

The long post:
My dream is to find the whole 9 yards: friendship, marriage, raise kids together; then we retire someplace warm or with a beach view. Does that sound good to anyone else?
If you sub to financialindependence/ we'll get along. I'm determined to retire early.
I’m a Hispanic 5’2, single, curvy/BBW, with hazel eyes, naturally dirty blonde hair (I dye it purple); living in the Santa Clarita Valley. I'm 38 years old.
I'm at the stage in my life where I'm financially stable, and am ready to have kids in a couple years. I'm looking for a partner who is in the same life stage as me. So age isn't important to me, but this is. Please don't DM me unless you want and are ready for the same.
I have 2 cats and 1 dog, I love them a lot. I'll always have pets in my life.
I’m a chatty texter; I respond as soon as I can.
I’ve never been married, nor do I have kids; I’m STD and drug free - I’m looking for the same.
As for age, race, height, weight; none of that matters to me. It's more important to me that we're in the same life stage.
Apparently I have to say this explicitly. Only message if you are single and are also looking for commitment.
Be prepared to video chat. I have no desire to be catfished.
I'm staying sane through the pandemic with the help of my 3 fur babies, and lots of TV.
Let's see, I've watched: Ozark, Narcos, Narcos Mexico, Dead to Me, Legacies, Living with Yourself, Preacher, Fleabag, Silicon Valley, Twin Peaks (old, movie and new), Ray Donovan, On Becoming a God in Central FL, Penny Dreadful (original series), The Umbrella Academy, Perry Mason, The Boys, Atlanta, What We Do in the Shadows (still need to watch the movie; it's not on any of my streaming services right now), The Orville.
I am looking for a new show to watch....
I got a COVID test in June. It was the up the nose one, ugh. Negative, yay! I'm more than fine getting another test before meeting you. Please be prepared to do that same.
I know COVID has added challenges to the already difficult world of dating. But I have faith we can find a way to safely meet. There are places we can drink/eat at patios.
Honestly, if there isn't at least a plan to meet within a month of talking, I'm out. I'm not looking for a penpal.
ABOUT ME:
-I want to live my life filled with love, laughter, family, yummy food, my puppy and kitties, and one day, kiddos.
-I'm a homebody who likes going out on special occasions.
-My hobbies include TV show and movie marathons; Disneyland (at night); Rock concerts.
-My Favorite shows: Arrested Development, Chuck, Friends, Agents of Shield, Game of Thrones, Schitt’s Creek, Supernatural, Umbrella Academy.
-Favorite movies: Corpse Bride, Airheads, Blow, The Departed, Office Space, The Prestige, Marvel Comic Universe, Harry PotteFantastic Beasts, Star Wars.
-Favorite bands: Pantera, Metallica, Green Day, My Chemical Romance, AFI. The most recent concerts I've been to are movie composer orchestra combos. i.e., Danny Elfman, and Ramin Djawadi.
-I have (had? Haha) a long commute. I listen to a podcast in the morning (The Ralph Report) and audiobooks at night; music too when I’m in the mood. Constantly looking for new audiobooks. Would appreciate recommendations. I like fantasy books; Harry Potter, A Song Of Ice and Fire. I fell in love with the Mistborn trilogy this last year.
-I'm looking for a serious, long term, monogamous relationship. I hope to meet someone with some similar interests, so we have something in common, but not someone exactly the same as me, because I don't think that'd be interesting or make for a good partnership. We’d be partners that help each other out, making life more enjoyable along the way.
-I live a healthy lifestyle (mind and body). Pre-COVID, I worked out daily. I’m on a weightloss journey. I would need to be with someone who’s supportive. Possible even currently going through the same thing or did in the past.
I need to be with someone that doesn’t give a shit about stretch marks and what not. Besides, if we have kids, I’ll get more.
If you eat healthy most of the time, it would make things easier.
I do still enjoy cheat meals, with carbs and sugars on special occasions. It just isn’t a daily thing anymore.
-Be hygienic, I am. Brush your teeth at least twice a day. Be a fan of mint and gum. Wash everywhere, including behind the ears.
Bonus points: if you wear cologne. I wear perfume on special occasions; mostly floral scents.
-I‘m Liberal. Being honest, I won’t have anything in common with someone who voted for, agrees with, and/or plans to vote for Trump or any of his butt kissers.
For example, I don’t think wanting universal healthcare so that I don’t have to worry about bankrupting myself and my loved ones, should I get in a horrible accident or cancer, makes me an evil socialist. It makes me want my country to be on par with the rest of the civilized world.
-I’m not very religious, I don’t think I can be with someone who is. I wouldn’t be good at religious conversations and I would not go to church.
-I don’t have any tattoos, only my ears are pierced (I wouldn’t care if you have tattoos or piercings).
-I’m middle class, and would need someone in at least a similar financial situation, so we can enjoy doing things together (restaurants, events, travel, tickets to Disneyland for the kids, etc...). I’m a fan of paying for my own food, tickets and what not. I am NOT looking to be a sugar baby and won’t be someone else’s sugar momma. We’re adults here; adults pay their own way.
-Traveling, of course I love to travel. I want to go back to Europe, I need to visit places like the PNW, Niagara Falls, Boston. When I have kids, I want to take them at least one to NYC for xmas (I love Christmas Tree lights); I would love to spend the other holidays in some place warm, like Australia/New Zealand. I like staying in fancy hotels. Room service is awesome. Taxis/Ubers are awesome. Right now, my job allows me to take a month off for vacations in summer. I need to start taking advantage of that.
-My dream is to retire early; in about 20 years. Not sure how that'll work with having children, but both things are worth attempting.
-I'm not a fan of being in the sun, because I get sunburnt easily. This is a big reason for why I am not an outdoorsy person.
-I hate being cold. I’m a big fan of heaters and electric blankets.
-I won’t care if you watch sports. Just don’t make me watch, don’t make our lives revolve around them, and we’ll get along. I don’t mind going to live sporting events, maybe once or twice a year. I’ll have no idea what’s going on, but I’ve had fun attending the few sporting events I have.
-I love my family, but it's a complicated relationship. I need a partner who understands this. Who will follow my lead with dealing with them, and above all else, will not try to interfere.
-Living Apart Together (LAT) appeals to me; or at the very least, we'd have a very big home. I never want to share a bathroom again. And I like the idea of each of us having a private space to go to if we just need some alone time.
-I’m pro vaccinations; sorry, can’t let an anti vaxxer touch me. If we were lucky to have kids, they would be vaccinated. In 2019, I got up to date with MMR and DTap booster shots, got the flu vaccine, and got the HPV vaccines. You’ll get bonus points if you’ve done this too.
-as far as sex life goes, I need to be with someone who gets off on making me orgasm. Be good with kissing, cuddling, oral, fingering (you gotta know where the G-Spot is). Bonus points is if you can do this for hours. Do it right, and you’ll be rewarded. Only a guy willing to wear condoms gets to touch me.
And no, I’m not looking for anything casual or a FWB. no we would not see if we’re sexually compatible out on the first few dates.
Sex is an important part of a lasting relationship, but it’s not the only thing. We have to click elsewhere before we get to sex.
-I don’t do drugs, don’t smoke anything at all; this includes 420 stuff. I drink alcohol on special occasions, but it’s not often. I’d need to be with someone who is the same.
In the subject line, please put your eye color.
Thank you for reading. I know this was long, but I know what I want. Has anyone seen the great early 2010s show Happy Endings? There’s a quote that I think describes what I’m looking for. Someone to realize: “I found a woman who was so sure of what she wanted, and she wanted me.” Brad to wife Jane, S2E18 ‘Party of Six.’
Those who need NOT apply:
-Addicts
-Liars and cheaters (I will be honest and monogamous, and expect the same)
-Racists (I do not think people who move to a new country, searching for a better life, are criminals. If you disagree, we won't get along.)
-Physically abusive, violent (maybe I've watched Big Little Lies too many times...)

2020.09.24 03:05 AutoModerator General Questions Thread, September 24, 2020

A thread for new collectors to ask basic questions of the community.
MyFigureCollection
My Figure Collection is like MyAnimeList... but for figures! Their database includes thousands of items which been produced during the last couple of decades, along with reviews of shops and other helpful articles. One can also list their own collection and post gallery photos.

2020.09.24 02:42 OverlordLork [Effortpost 9 of 15] The legislative graveyard

Under current Senate rules, the Senate majority leader has the power to choose if and when a bill comes up for debate. Mitch McConnell has made great use of this power, blocking hundreds of bills in what's often known as the "legislative graveyard". McConnell has even bragged about being the "grim reaper" of bills.
Republican Senators empowered him to do this because it takes the heat off of them. They don't want to pass these bills, but they also don't want to be on the record voting against something that the people want. So instead, they unanimously voted for McConnell to be majority leader so that he could take all the blame.
Here are a few of the bills currently buried in the graveyard:
HR 1 - For the People Act
This is a comprehensive voting rights and anti-corruption overhaul.
It would restore protections from the 1965 Voting Rights Act, which was struck down by the conservative Supreme Court justices on the grounds that Congress failed to keep it up to date. It would make voting easier by mandating that states implement automatic voter registration, online voter registration, and early voting options. It would end gerrymandering by mandating that states implement nonpartisan redistricting commissions. It would restore voting rights to felons who have served their time. It would protect election security by ensuring that all votes cast have a paper trail.
In my voting rights post, I detailed many of the reasons that these reforms are necessary. But since Republicans hate when everyone has the right to vote, McConnell called it a "one-sided power grab".
On the anti-corruption front, it would prevent members of Congress from serving on corporate boards. It would add transparency to the sources of dark money in elections, and of online political ads. It would give teeth to the Federal Election Commission, the Office of Government Ethics, and the Foreign Agents Registration Act Office, so that they could actually go after violations. It would create ethics standards for Supreme Court justices.
Source for the above summary
HR 6800 - HEROES Act
This is a $3 trillion COVID relief bill. It would provide an additional $1200 relief check to all Americans. It would give healthcare workers substantially more workplace protections. It would extend the CARES Act's unemployment benefits. It would help small businesses stay afloat by adding funding to the PPP. It would give a trillion in relief funding to state and local governments. It would fund COVID research, testing, tracing, and treatments. It would delay evictions and provide billions in housing assistance. It would provide for safer conditions in prisons, because they've been responsible for many major outbreaks so far. It would fund the Postal Service. And much more.
HR 1644 - Save the Internet Act
This would have re-implemented net neutrality.
HR 6 - American Dream and Promise Act
Under Obama's DACA policy, immigrants who were brought here as children years ago are able to stay as long as they get an education, register with DACA every 2 years, and don't commit crimes. HR 6 would prevent these protections from being revoked. It also would provide a pathway to citizenship.
HR 269 - Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness and Advancing Innovation Act
This bill would have reauthorized pandemic preparedness funding, and updated our pandemic response systems. It was written before COVID-19 existed.
HR 9 - Climate Action Now Act
This would keep us in the Paris Agreement and hold us to the promises we made under that agreement.
HR 582 - Raise the Wage Act
This would raise the minimum wage.
HR 2722 - SAFE Act
This would help secure our elections. It would ensure paper trails for voting, and provide funding to states to secure their systems against hackers.
HR 7120 - George Floyd Justice in Policing Act
This would limit the "qualified immunity" that makes it nearly impossible to win civil suits against officers. It would make it easier for the Department of justice to investigate and prosecute wrongdoing by officers. And it would create the National Police Misconduct Registry.
HR 986 - Protecting Americans With Preexisting Conditions Act
This would undo the Trump administration's decision to let states ignore parts of the ACA that ensure people with preexisting conditions can still get health insurance.
HR 1585 - Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act
The Violence Against Women Act was a law that made it easier to prosecute domestic abusers. It expired in 2019, so this act would have reauthorized it. It also would have closed the "boyfriend loophole" to take guns away from domestic abusers. Currently, this only happens if they were married, living together, and/or had a child together.
HR 8 - Bipartisan Background Checks Act
This would require background checks for private transfers of gun ownership. It has reasonable exceptions such as allowing transfers between immediate family members, or temporary transfers for hunting, or handing a gun to someone who is under imminent threat of attack.
HR 1331 - Local Water Protection Act
This would fund state programs to ensure clean water.
HR 1941 - Coastal and Marine Economies Protection Act
This would renew bans on offshore drilling.
HR 987 - The Strengthening Health Care and Lowering Prescription Drug Costs Act
This act combined seven bills for improving the healthcare system. Three of them would make it easier to roll out cheaper generic drugs, by blocking stalling tactics that pharmaceutical companies use on each other. One would provide funding to help states that want to establish their own state-based insurance marketplaces. One would reimplement the Obama administration's regulations against "junk insurance plans" that fail to properly cover people. And two would make it easier to use the Affordable Care Act marketplace to find coverage.

2020.09.24 00:01 Stevenasaurus We Are Operators Episode 10: Why We Fight Part 1

Jay
Thura's Office
Thura made herself comfy in her chair as Jay stepped into her office and sat down in the one opposite of her. Before she could say a word to Jay, she ran her fingers along her Vouivre horns as a pre-interview ritual. While she did this, she did a few last minute skims of Jay's files that were open on her computer and waited for a moment in silence.
“It's good to see you again,” Jay greeted.
“Thank you for coming, Jay,” Thura greeted back. “As the one responsible for forming new squads from our recruits, I am conducting interviews with new operators that have been with Rhodes Island for some time. I don't want to consider this a post-probation interview or a performance review, but that's pretty close to what this is.”
Jay nodded. “I understand. So you're gonna be asking me questions about how I've been doing and stuff like that?”
“Yes,” Thura answered with a nod of her own.
“Where do we start?” Jay asked.
Thura pulled the clipboard she had at the far right of her desk in front of her. “First off, I need to establish a few things with you. Firstly, this interview is mandatory so you can't walk out and leave until I let you go. Second, this interview will be recorded and will be requested for viewing by interested parties. Inversely, that means there is no expectation of privacy so if you wish, you may discuss what we talk about with others. Finally, I'd like to know if you prefer if I type out my notes or write them down.”
“I'm okay with either,” Jay said while shrugging.
“Some people don't like the constant tapping of keys while some people feel uncomfortable with the writing. If you don't care, I'm going to type out my notes,” Thura explained.
“Okay. So are we starting now?” Jay asked.
Thura nodded. “Yes. Are you satisfied with the accommodations Rhodes Island has provided?”
“Yeah,” Jay started. “My dorm's pretty nice and the facilities here offer a lot when I'm not training or at my trading post job.”
“Do you think there's any room for improvement?” Thura asked.
“If there was a bar on this ship that'd be pretty cool. I don't drink much but it'd be a pretty cool place to hang out,” Jay suggested.
Thura quickly typed out a summary of Jay's suggestion. “If that's all you've got to suggest, then let's move on. Why don't we talk about your squad mates?”
Spark
Thura's Office
“What about my squad mates?”Spark asked, scratching her chin.
Thura put down her pen. “Well, you were slated to become captain of C2 at one point, you must've had an opinion on everyone so that you'd know how to command them.”
“The girls on my squad are kinda weird to be honest while the guys are all dorks,” Spark said, holding back a smile.
What a way to describe your team mates.
“What makes the girls weird?” Thura asked, picking up her pen and readying it against the paper on her clipboard.
“Labcoat is always really happy which gets a bit off putting at times but then she can get super mad quicker than a snap of the fingers. Although, she's really fun to be around when she's not mad,” Spark explained.
“And what about Meeka?” Thura asked.
Spark spent some time to think and scratched her chin. “She's kinda boring. She's always playing games on her phone and doesn't really do much. I mean, if I tell her to do something she'll do it but it feels like I'm always the one initiating these days.”
“Interesting,” Thura exclaimed while writing down the answer. “How receptive is she when you ask her to do things? Does she get upset? Does she look disinterested?”
“Um... she's just blank. She acknowledges what I say and then does it before going back to her phone. It's kinda hard to describe unless you live with her,” Spark answered.
Thura scribbled down a few notes of her own alongside Spark's answer. “And you said all the guys on your squad are dorks? Could you elaborate further?”
“When Eddron's not hanging out with Jay or Alabaster, he's out there trying his luck with girls. He doesn't stalk them or anything and he leaves them alone after they walk away, but obviously his advances make some people uncomfortable. I've tried to help him and he's definitely gotten a bit more respectful but he's still got a lot of work to do,” Spark explained.
“I wouldn't exactly call that kind of behaviour as dorky. I'll speak to the people that handle stuff like this to see if we could arrange some sort of seminar and get problem operators to attend. Moving on, what kind of dork would you describe Alabaster as?” Thura asked.
Spark looked up at the ceiling. “I guess dork's kind of a mean word for him. He's always around to offer advice or wisdom so he's kinda got that dad vibe going on but I guess that makes him a dork in the sense that he's a bit of an old geezer.”
“Well you should cherish the advice and wisdom he has to offer,” Thura said with an awkward laugh.
“I mean,” Spark started, her eyes and mouth both forming a smile. “that's kinda what I love about my squad; they're all quirky in their own way.”
“What about Jay? You didn't describe him yet. Would you consider him as someone that acts in the best interests of Rhodes Island and its personnel?” Thura asked.
Spark stopped smiling and adopted a more thoughtful expression. She looked up at the ceiling again while scratching her right cheek as her eyes darted left and right.
“Jay cares for us all deeply, a little too deeply at times but I know he means well. I still offer him a little help in planning things from time to time but I think it was good he became captain instead of me,” Spark answered, her eyes on the table instead of meeting Thura's.
Thura wrote down the answer and tapped her pen on the paper a few times. “What do you think about him on a personal level?”
Spark let out a soft gasp and bit her lip. “What do you mean by that?”
“You've spoken what you think of your squad mates as people but Jay as a captain. What do you think about him as a person instead of a captain?” Thura asked.
“He's really cool. He's got a few quirks of his own but it feels like he's one of the more normal ones in the squad,” Spark answered.
Thura swiftly transcribed what Spark said. “Anything else?”
“Oh... um...” Spark muttered.
“How about you talk about incidents that impacted your opinion of Jay?” Thura asked.
“He went through the trash to find something for Alabaster, he got a job that he didn't really need so we all wouldn't feel bad for getting jobs too, and... he saved me during our first training run with E4. Those are just some of the many things he's done for us all,” Spark explained, her voice going softer throughout the answer.
“So do you think of him as a dork?” Thura asked while writing her own notes.
Spark nodded. “Yes... but in a good way. Like a dork everyone can hang out with. I guess that's kinda why he's able to interact with so many people here. Alabaster's shy but also quite intimidating when you don't know him so people kinda avoid him. Labcoat's outgoing but when she gets angry people run the other way. Meeka doesn't talk to anyone so nobody talks to her. People don't want Eddron anywhere near them. And for me, I'm doing okay with interacting with other operators but I can still get a bit serious at times which puts some people off.”
Thura held up her hand to get Spark to stop so she could write down as much as she could. “Continue.”
“When you talk to Jay, he's almost always joking around or smiling. He's like that guy you can't help but just want to have a beer with. Does that help?” Spark explained.
Thura could see that Spark was getting a bit more comfortable in her chair and adopted a slightly better posture.
“That does help,” Thura said with a smile. “You look like you need a glass of water after that speech of yours. How about we take a short break so I can have someone bring it in before we move onto questions about your goals?”
“Thank you, Madame Thura,” Spark said graciously.
Darn it... I thought I was going to make it through this interview without her calling me Madame.
Eddron
Thura's Office
“In your entry interview, you stated your goal was to be the best sniper among our operators. Do you think you've gotten closer to attaining such a goal?” Thura asked, her fingers ready on her keyboard.
Eddron crossed his arms and nodded with a grin. “My aim's gotten a lot better. Plus, bullets probably do a lot more damage than a bolt or arrow ever could so I've got that advantage already.”
“Well, someone capable of imbuing arts into their arrows or bolts could do quite some damage; I wouldn't underestimate them,” Thura warned.
“Meh, I'll beat them one day,” Eddron said with confidence.
Thura knew that Eddron had a reason for wanting to be the best sniper, his true goal. It was certainly displeasing to see several complaints head over to the HR Office even if their frequency and quantity had decreased drastically over time and still, even one was too much for a professional workplace. However, there wasn't much she could do not just because it wasn't her department in HR, but because certain executives in the leadership were averse to losing the massive donations from a redacted source in exchange for his continued presence at Rhodes Island which just felt so dirty.
Although, she could see the naive immaturity in him. While inexcusable, perhaps his actions were from a lack of instruction and awareness that needed to be instilled in him from a young age. Thura did remember seeing a note in Eddron's file about his father constantly being abroad due to his position as an advisor to Laterano diplomats across Terra.
Even if Eddron was untouchable, she could still ask about it, possibly even get him in the right direction just like Spark was trying to do.
“I'd like to talk about your womanizing antics with you,” Thura said sternly.
Eddron sat up straight. “What about them?”
“Why do you do it? Is there a reason you're so keen on getting with a girl?” Thura asked, carefully keeping her tone so that she wasn't accusatory but still assertive enough to demand an answer.
“I guess I'm just lonely,” Eddron said.
Thura crossed her arms. “Lonely? But what about your squad? You spend so much time with them after all.”
“Not like friends lonely, but girlfriend lonely, you know?” Eddron explained.
Ah the naivety of youth.
“So you think a girlfriend will fill this void?” Thura asked as she readied to start typing again.
“Well, why wouldn't she?” Eddron argued.
“You want a girlfriend because you have a problem you wish to deal with and that is your loneliness.” Thura argued back.
Eddron stared at Thura blankly. “What?”
“Imagine this,” Thura started, “you finally get a girlfriend and that feeling of loneliness goes away. Would you still be with her once that loneliness goes away?”
“O-of course,” Eddron answered assertively.
Come on, Eddron. Just get it.
“You've said it yourself, you're trying so hard to get a girlfriend because of that feeling of loneliness. You would like this girlfriend because she filled that void, but once that void is gone, what happens then? Would you still like her as much as you did?” Thura asked.
“That's not what's going to happen,” Eddron said, his tone suggesting he was starting to get upset.
“Eddron,” Thura called with a stern voice. “You're so desperate to fill this void that you're just going after any girl you encounter. Like I said before, it sounds like you want to deal with that loneliness more than actually building an actual relationship with someone. There are exceptions to every rule so it could work out for you, but the only reason I feel somewhat qualified to speak about this is because in my experience this line of thought leads to drifting apart and eventual heartbreak.”
Thura paused immediately when she realized what she just admitted. Frankly, it was ancient history but it still felt weird to bring up her past—especially parts concerning her romantic history—to a random operator she was interviewing.
“Your experience?” Eddron asked.
Thura eventually nodded. “Yes.”
“Sorry,” Eddron said softly while looking away.
“It's my fault for blurting it out,” Thura said, mustering a smile.
“Still, I'm sorry,” Eddron said.
“I've seen it many times before in other young people too. People who think getting a partner could make them cooler or that they'll somehow solve all their problems,” Thura explained.
“Now that I think about it, that does kinda sound like me... I guess I shouldn't get a girlfriend then...” Eddron said, looking defeated.
Thura shook her head. “I'm not saying that, Eddron. But instead of trying to fill that void, why not just get to know some people and see who interests you? It'll definitely save you some trouble down the road when you realize the only thing you like about them is what they look like. And that's a perfect segue into what I wanted to speak to you about next.”
“Something else?” Eddron asked.
“Do you understand how the ways you've interacted with female operators and staff in the past can be seen as wrong?” Thura asked.
Eddron averted his eyes and nodded. “Kinda... Spark tried to explain it to me so I kinda get it. But I mean, I don't do anything else besides talking to them.”
“That could still be an issue to some people. Some people could be having a bad day and don't want to be bothered while others could have places to be. And some people just don't want to talk and that's alright. Another person's wants don't begin where yours end, they can overlap or conflict. Obviously it's good that you don't take things to a dangerous level, but people don't get commended for doing the bare minimum for the most part,” Thura explained with a clear voice.
“So I can't talk to girls?” Eddron asked.
“You can, but understand that everyone has a different set of boundaries. And these rules also go the other way. How would you feel if someone you didn't want to talk to kept bothering you? While you don't do this, imagine if you couldn't even leave your dorm without thinking that person you didn't want to talk was around somewhere. Would you like that?” Thura argued.
Eddron slowly shook his head. “No...”
“While the number of complaints against you have gone done to almost zero, the fact we still get some every now and then needs to be addressed. Instead of talking to every girl that moves, why don't you think of some girls you've seen around a lot or just enjoy having you around? They'd probably be better than girls who have never seen you before,” Thura explained.
Eddron crossed his arms and looked like he was in thought. “Well I spend a lot of time with my squad mates. Spark's really cool, Labcoat's really nice, and Meeka's pretty interesting during the few the times we texted and talked. Then there's Vigna from my factory job, we talk a bit when Vanilla isn't around. Oh! And there's also-”
“Alright then,” Thura called out while keeping a hand up. “I'm not here to help you figure out a list or give you dating advice. All I wanted to do was make sure you understood your past behaviour. If it weren't for your mysterious benefactor you'd either be in the brig or packing your bags and left at the next docking city with all the complaints you've gotten.”
“Mysterious benefactor?” Eddron asked.
He doesn't know about it? It'd be inappropriate to ask about it, especially with this being recorded.
“A heavy discussion like this deserves a break don't you think? How about you take a minute or two to collect yourself before we go into how you've gotten closer to achieving your stated goal?” Thura asked, smiling innocently.
“Okay,” Eddron said.
Alabaster
Thura's Office
Thura constantly kept listening for the chair the massive Ursus man was sitting on to make sure it wasn't close to breaking. Other than the constant tension with the chair, it almost didn't feel like an interview with the pleasant conversation going on, but as a professional, Thura was able to stay the course and ensure Alabaster provided enough information for her notes and recording.
While Alabaster was older than Thura, it still felt refreshing to have someone of a similar age to speak to instead of the constant interviews with, young adults, teenagers, and even children.
“According to observations from instructors, you have definitely improved in your ability to stand in the face of danger. Their assessments heavily contrast from your entry interview,” Thura said while scrolling through reports from Dobermann and other instructors.
Alabaster nodded. “I lived a rather sheltered life. After taking part in many exercises, I realized combat wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be. And with a dependable team by my side, I am quite confident whenever I'm on the field of battle.”
“That's very good to hear,” Thura said while typing Alabaster's reply into her notes. “Although, even though I'm not an operator, I can't imagine training will be the same as the real thing.”
“Yes, I am not under the illusion that I'll be completely adaptable to actual combat, but... all this practice and meeting my squad have given me confidence I will make it through when my first instinct back then would've been to flee for my own life. If I can stand a chance, I think- I think I can actually stand and fight,” Alabaster said passionately.
Thura smiled. “As the one who formed your squad, that makes me really happy to hear.”
“Being around them all does make me feel young at times,” Alabaster said.
Thura typed a note. “How have you been integrating with your squad? While they may make you feel younger, there's got to be times where you feel that you don't fit in with the younger crowd.”
Alabaster nodded. “There's a few words they throw around every now and then that take me awhile to figure out. I can barely keep up with Jay and Eddron when they want to play video games. But they still try to include me in everything.”
“Very good. Sounds like you're enjoying your time with them. Now, we're going to have to unfortunately move onto a more serious topic. I've been instructed to ask a few followup questions on what you discussed in your entry interview. Do you remember that?” Thura asked.
“Yes,” Alabaster said. “My family.”
Thura opened a new instance of the file viewer on her computer and brought up the file on the Olovsky family. “As of your entry interview, you stated that your family was unaware that you were here. Has that changed?”
“I'm not sure, but considering the influence and resources at the Olovsky family's disposal, it'd be safer to assume that they now know where I am,” Alabaster answered with a solemn tone.
“Should Rhodes Island consider the Olovsky family a threat?” Thura asked as she typed down Alabaster's previous answer.
“I don't think they are a direct threat to us, but considering my standing with them, they won't be friends to us,” Alabaster warned.
Thura frowned and nodded. “If the Olovsky family were to act maliciously against us, how do you think they'd go about it?”
“Ursus do not enjoy covert operations, at least publicly. It is a society that projects strength which means if they were able to, the Olovskys would send their private army of mercenaries and household guards. But, without a reason to go after us, they would consider sending an agent or two as long as it didn't become public,” Alabaster explained.
“That is troubling,” Thura said after sighing. “Do you believe that at its current capabilities, Rhodes Island could fend off an attack from the Olovsky family?”
“At our current strength, we would be outnumbered but we would possibly have the advantage in skills and tactics. I am unsure about the outcome of a battle,” Alabaster answered.
“And who should we be most aware of among your family members?” Thura asked.
Alabaster paused. “What do you plan to do with that information?”
“I can't tell you that. Firstly, because I don't know myself. Second, that information would be on a need to know basis,” Thura explained.
Alabaster hesitated for a moment before nodding. “The ones you should be keeping an eye on are my brother Vadim and my mother. My father is mostly confined to a bed these days but is being kept alive by my brother and mother in the hopes that he lives long enough for me to be discredited and disinherited in the eyes of Ursus high society. In a way, their need for me to be disinherited will keep Rhodes Island safe.”
“How so?” Thura asked.
“If they reveal that I am here, it would help build my case to succeed my father. They would have to be very careful about how they approach us lest they show that I am making the effort to become a great warrior,” Alabaster answered, looking saddened.
Thura stopped typing. “Is something wrong, Alabaster?”
“I'm just thinking about how all this could've been avoided if I was braver back then,” Alabaster said, a barely visible frown forming under his beard.
“Oh come on, there's no need to think that way. Let's take a moment before we move on to the next round of questions,” Thura said.
Alabaster crossed his arms and nodded. “Yes. Thank you.”
Labcoat
Thura's Office
“As an infected, there are more special circumstances to consider when we talk about your time here,” Thura explained.
Labcoat nodded. “Okay.”
The girl couldn't sit still and did very subtle hops on her chair since she sat down. Thura could hear Labcoat's foot tapping on the floor which had been slowly becoming more grating as the interview went on. With the questions she had checked off on her clipboard, Thura loathed to see that only half of the questions had been asked so far.
“Did you have any concerns with integrating or interacting with your fellow operators as an infected?” Thura asked, readying her pen and taking a deep breath.
“Nope,” Labcoat answered. “Should I have?”
“No, absolutely not. If there was a problem you would tell us but if there's no issue then there's no issue,” Thura said.
Labcoat smiled. “There's no problem. It doesn't really come up. It's not like any of my squad mates suddenly go 'Hey! How's the infection going?!' or anything like that.”
“That's very good to hear,” Thura said with a smile of her own while writing down the answer. “Are you satisfied with the medical treatment you are receiving? This isn't a question about whether or not you're cured, I'm asking if you are happy with the treatment.”
While she waited for Labcoat to answer, she pulled up Labcoat's medical files.
“It's okay. I'm okay with the pills and needles. The surgeries are what scare me,” Labcoat answered.
“Well according to your files, you aren't in any need of any drastic surgeries right now so you have nothing to be worried about as long as you follow the treatment plans and medical advice from your medical professionals,” Thura explained.
“Okay,” Labcoat said, still looking somewhat frightened.
“Are you satisfied with the personnel assigned to you?” Thura asked.
Labcoat nodded. “Agatha the intern is really nice and she sometimes even helps me study. Dr. Coren doesn't talk much but when he does, he offers good advice. He and Agatha are trying to help me control my anger right now.”
“Rhodes Island is said to possess some of the greatest medical minds against Oripathy so you should be in good hands with them. I'm glad to hear you're getting along well with them; a good relationship between a doctor and patient can definitely help with the treatment process,” Thura said.
Labcoat didn't say anything and stayed silent for a moment.
“Do you think they'll find a cure?” she finally asked.
Thura could only look at Labcoat. “I don't know. I'm not a doctor. How would I know?”
“Do you think there could be a cure one day?” Labcoat asked again.
“I hope so,” Thura said candidly.
Another bout of silence took the office.
“Let's move onto a different topic. Why don't you just tell me more about how you feel in general?” Thura asked.
Meeka
Thura's Office
Thura rested her cheek on her hand as she waited for Meeka to reply. The girl seemed so disinterested and with the expression on her face, Thura didn't know where the boredom began and the sadness ended.
“I'm okay,” Meeka answered softly.
“You don't sound like you feel okay,” Thura said.
“I'm okay,” Meeka repeated.
“From what people have said about you, you tend to keep to yourself. Do you have trouble expressing yourself? Trusting others?” Thura asked.
Meeka shook her head. “No... I just keep to myself.”
“What do you do when you're not hanging around in your dorm or playing those games on your phone?” Thura asked.
“Nothing really,” Meeka said.
Thura tapped her chin with her pen. “What if Spark wants to do something with you? Would you hang out with her?”
“I would,” Meeka said.
“Seems to me that you're lacking in drive. You can follow orders during training well and when someone wants to do something with you, you'll do it. But when it comes to yourself, you never really initiate,” Thura explained.
“I guess...” Meeka said.
“Are you sure you're feeling alright?” Thura asked.
Meeka nodded. “Yeah... I'm just quiet.”
“I'm not trained to handle matters relating to mental health, but have you ever considered going in for a consultation with our mental health professionals?” Thura suggested.
Meeka shook her head. “I'm okay.”
“It doesn't cost anything, it's a service we provide to all operators and staff here. Although, there's only two mental health workers last time I checked so they might be booked for the week,” Thura said.
“It'd be a waste of time,” Meeka said, looking annoyed.
“Mental health isn't something to be neglected. You feel something wrong in your body, you go straight to the doctor. Why not the same for your mental health?” Thura argued.
“There's nothing wrong with me,” Meeka said.
Thura shrugged. “Even if they told you that this behaviour is just who you are, that's still better than taking a risk and not addressing any concerns if there are any. What have you got to lose? It's free and the workers will be happy you came to see them. I see it as an absolute win.”
“What will my squad think?” Meeka asked.
“You can choose whether to tell them or not. Maybe you can say you took an extra shift at your job if you've got one. Although, with the members of your squad I've already interviewed, they all seem to want what's best for you,” Thura said.
Meeka looked down. “I'll think about it...”
“Please consider it. Would you like to take a minute or two before we move onto the next round of questions?” Thura asked.
Meeka kept her hands on her lap. “Yes please.”
Jay
Thura's Office
After a long back and forth with Jay, Thura had finally run out of questions for him. It was an interesting interview and the things he had to say about his squad would be useful information for when she got around to interviewing them.
“That's about all the questions I have for you. Do you have anything else you wanted to discuss or ask about that we didn't go over during the interview?” Thura asked.
Jay paused for a moment and scratched his chin before nodding. “What exactly does Rhodes Island do?”
Thura was taken aback by the question. It was usually something someone asked in their entry interview, not when they were a few months in. Even after recovering from the initial surprise, Thura still took the time to craft a response.
“That's a question you ask when you first come here. We're a registered pharmaceutical company working on providing medical advancements and treatment across Terra in all matters concerning Oripathy. You should know this by now,” Thura explained.
“I know that stuff, but when I took this operator job, I was kinda expecting it to be like a security guard job where I'd just keep watch or protect doctors and aid workers when they go out with the perk of seeing the world,” Jay said.
Thura nodded. “Well, you'll be doing stuff like that.”
“Are we?” Jay asked with a concerned expression. “Ever since we started training with E4, we've been going up against tactics and equipment that the military uses. I brushed it off at first but we're going up against everything Ursus would throw at us these days and it's making me wonder.”
“The job description said that you'd need to be prepared for battle,” Thura argued.
“Well, I'm ready for battle, but it looks like we're getting ready for a war,” Jay argued back.
“Why Dobermann and the other instructors are putting you through such training is something I wouldn't know. Do you think your squad's not ready for combat?” Thura asked.
Jay shook his head. “No. We're ready, but what exactly are we ready for? What's with all these preparations? Is something going to happen?”
Do not go down that line of questioning, Jay. I need to warn him without explicitly telling him to shut up unless I want a good talking to from upstairs.
“That's on a need to know basis. Everything that's done has its reasons, I can assure you of that,” Thura explained sternly.
“Why would we have to go up against the Ursus military?” Jay asked.
Thura stared at Jay. “I'm not sure. What's got you so concerned?”
“Lots of things really... I mean first off, I've been thinking of training as something fun to do, but now that I remembered we'll be using these skills—especially against a military—I'm getting worried about how it'll go now. Come on, I worked at a supermarket before this, I'm not a soldier,” Jay answered, looking down at his hands.
“I've seen army recruiters at high schools and officers conscripting farmers in their fields. Every soldier picks up a sword for the first time at one point. Some will keep swinging it until they can't anymore and others will put it down. You can become a soldier,” Thura said with a reassuring tone.
Jay nodded along with Thura's words and even looked a bit relieved. “I guess... but that's really a minor thing. What I'm really thinking about is if what we're about to do—whatever it is—is the right thing. I've heard bad things about Ursus but does that really make whatever we're going to do to them the right thing?”
“You and I have no idea what's going to happen,” Thura said.
“I know,” Jay said abruptly. “But if it was humanitarian work we probably wouldn't need to be prepared to fight a whole Ursus legion and they probably wouldn't be keeping it secret from us either.”
Jay, the more you poke your nose into executive business the more they'll poke back. Please stop!
“I wouldn't think too deeply about this. Cordial relations with governments across Terra allow us to have access to their territory in order to provide medical assistance to those in need. While Ursus doesn't hide their disdain for the infected, we still need to be in their good graces so we can provide the help people need,” Thura explained.
“In my entry interview, the interviewers remarked about my observational skills. I'm thinking deeply about this because I know there's more than meets the eye,” Jay said.
Did you not remember what I told you at the beginning where this would be recorded and viewed?!
“I've worked here for awhile now and I can say with confidence we've done so much to help people across Terra. We've saved communities, gave help to those that needed it, and even at times helped deliver justice. What makes you think an organization like this would start doing some sort of shady stuff all of the sudden?” Thura argued.
Jay spent what felt like a full two minutes in silence. “I really needed to hear that... I guess maybe my worries were stupid. Thank you... It was just a feeling I couldn't shake off for awhile now.”
“Well I'm glad to have helped you with your doubts. These interviews are happening because we feel there is a mutual trust growing between the operator and Rhodes Island,” Thura said.
“Is the interview over?” Jay asked.
Thura nodded while typing the last of her notes. “Yes, you may leave.”
Jay bowed his head and stood up. He swiftly took his exit and closed the door behind him, leaving Thura to skim through the notes she had taken in silence. She didn't like what she was seeing.
Good luck, Jay.
Thura saved the notes she had typed and opened a new blank text document. She couldn't afford to dwell on the interview with Jay as there were still plenty of operators left to interview including those in Jay's squad.
6:04 PM
Cafeteria
Jay picked at his spaghetti for a bit before eventually bringing it up to his mouth with his fork. He kept thinking about the interview. While his worries about being party to some shady wetwork had mostly dissipated, his initial anxieties about actual combat came back to the forefront.
While some of his squad looked deep in thought like Eddron and Meeka, the others seemed cheerful and laughing. They were all the greatest friends he had since the people he knew back in younger days had practically disappeared from his life. Soon, they would be his brothers and sisters in arms.
Frankly, it was never about doubts about their abilities. The squad was a well-oiled machine that fought against incredible odds. However, it was one particular moment that kept replaying in his head that brought about his fears: when he saved Spark from almost being stabbed by multiple spears.
Would he be around in time to save the next person that was in danger? Did he save Spark so swiftly because he liked her? What if Spark and someone else were in trouble? Would he have to choose between them and would he accept that choice? The pressures of leadership continued to pile on.
“Man that interview was so long and boring!” Labcoat whined.
“I thought it was quite interesting; I somewhat felt like I was speaking with an intellectual equal in Madame Thura,” Alabaster said.
“What's that supposed to mean? You're saying we're dumb?” Spark asked with a smile.
Alabaster's face turned red and he shook his head. “No! I'm sorry! I meant no disrespect!”
“Guys,” Eddron called.
“What is it, Eddron?” Spark asked.
“I know you guys say I'm not as much of a douche now, but I'm sorry for the way I was back then,” Eddron said softly.
“What brought this up?” Meeka asked.
“Thura said something that made it finally click for me, you know? She said: 'Another person's wants don't begin where yours end.' I probably got slapped and ignored a lot because I didn't understand that. I mean I'm not a bad guy, right? I'm not a creep. I just... didn't understand that,” Eddron explained.
Spark smiled. “Glad it finally clicked for you. You're not a bad guy, Eddron.”
“Thanks,” Eddron said, averting his eyes from everyone.
Jay smiled but said nothing. He was glad the interviews seemed to have a good effect on most of his squad.
Meeka looked around for a moment before clearing her throat. “I think I'm gonna take another shift at my job...”
“What? Did Thura tell you to?” Labcoat asked.
“Yeah,” Meeka answered.
“I guess more work keeps you out of the dorm and away from your phone more. Although, I shouldn't question her methods,” Spark said.
“What about you, Jay?” Alabaster asked, the red on his face mostly gone.
“Oh,” Jay exclaimed. “It was okay. She helped me get over some anxieties I had.”
“They should give her a raise or something,” Eddron said.
Spark looked at Jay. “Hey, Jay, you went before me right? During the squad mate portion of the interview she was asking me about you a lot more than everyone else.”
“Come to think of it, she did ask a lot about you as well,” Alabaster said.
“Same,” Eddron said.
“Did something happen?” Labcoat asked.
Jay shrugged. “Maybe she's just worried about me.”
“You've been picking at your spaghetti for awhile now, we're all worried for you,” Spark said with a face of concern.
“I'm okay...” Jay said, starting to piece together why Thura inquired about him in his head.
8:32 PM
Thura's Office
Thura ran her fingers along her Vouivre horns and sighed as she saw she had less than thirty minutes left in the work day. Although, at this time during the interview day, she was expecting the dreaded email from her superiors.
She clicked on the email application and looked at the very top of the list to see that the email in question had finally been sent. The topic: List of Names for Further Inquiry.
Here comes the hardest part of the day.
Thura clicked the email and read it quickly.
Thura,
We have reviewed every interview of the C series of reserve teams and have compiled a list of operators we would like to followup on. Please send all relevant files and information from HR on the following operators:
Caitlyn Morti (Kettle)
Leopold Schmidt (Mural)
Hiro Takafusa (Hiro)
Jay Dresmal (Jay)
Patricia Davenport (Dancer)
Please send the requested information at your earliest convenience.
Thank you,
Command Ops
Thura sighed and quickly opened up the files and notes she had taken for the operators in question.
The Next Day, 7:34 AM
Cafeteria
Jay sat quietly and sipped on his cup of coffee. The many chairs and tables of the cafeteria were empty while only a skeleton crew worked the kitchens and counters. It was preferable, the last thing he wanted was a lot of noise while he enjoyed his coffee.
He didn't get much sleep last night as he couldn't help but feel like he had said the wrong things in his interview. If Rhodes Island was just like Thura said it was, he probably didn't have anything to worry about. But learning of her inquiries into him and her constant insistence gave him the sinking feeling that something big was going on.
“Jay!” Aero's voice called.
Jay looked up and smiled at Aero. “Hey.”
“I don't usually see you at breakfast hours,” Aero said, sitting down across from Jay while drinking from a coffee cup.
“I grab a cup of coffee and a hash brown every now and then,” Jay said.
Aero nodded. “My days as a page and squire have trained me to wake up early. I always grab a cup of coffee to help me get through the day.”
“Those interviews were something yesterday, huh?” Jay asked as he chugged down the last bit of his coffee.
“That Thura woman's got a way with words. HR suits her well,” Aero said as he also chugged down his coffee.
“Yeah,” Jay stood up to go return his cup.
Aero followed Jay to the counter. “What's got you down?”
“Just thinking about the interview,” Jay said as he left the cup on the counter and headed for the cafeteria exit.
“She give you some of her wisdom as well? My squad's been raving about the advice she's given off,” Aero said with a smile as the two left the cafeteria.
“Yeah,” Jay said while heading down a corridor.
“Where you headed? You not in the mood to talk?” Aero asked.
Jay shook his head. “Not because of you. I just wanna think about stuff.”
“Sure, we can chat another time,” Aero said while waving goodbye as he turned around and headed back in the direction of the cafeteria.
Jay put his hands in his pockets and picked which corridors to head down at random. It almost felt like his first day wandering aimlessly around the ship. Wondering about his goals and aspirations. He mustered a smile when he remembered his declaration of wanting to get on a cereal box. With all the responsibilities and activity within Rhodes Island, it had completely slipped his mind. In hindsight it might've been a stupid goal, but it certainly helped him get this far.
“Excuse me, Operator Jay?” a voice called behind him.
Jay turned around and locked eyes with a Zalak woman with purplish-white hair. “Yes?”
“We are conducting followup interviews from the ones that happened yesterday. Please come with me,” the Zalak woman said.
“Take your hands out of your pockets... slowly,” a soft voice commanded.
Jay turned around again and spotted a Lupo girl in a red coat and hood. She had an intimidating aura to her and Jay noticed a small knife between her fingers.
“This isn't a request, Operator Jay. This is a command. Come with us,” the Zalak woman demanded, her tone completely opposite of her previous politeness.

2020.09.23 20:56 SeeYaIamOut Talking with semi-adult children this afternoon/tonight. Need advice on how to help them process this whole (*&#^#^@ Show.

Update after talking with children
UPDATE: I am reading your responses as fast as they come in and I am extremely grateful. I heard from my daughter and she will be a little late tonight but she reiterated her desire for the three of us to talk and asked me to be patient and not to engage my son who is due home in an hour. I of course agreed to that. Please feel free to continue to respond of course and know that I am grateful for the kindness of the strangers on here that have taken the time to answer my post and to those that have reached out in private. I am slowly realizing my anger is overshadowing my ability to reason this out in a way that is helpful to my children. While to some the advice given may be obvious but when you're in the trenches it's hard to see very far.
My intention was to post this on the Surviving Infidelity website but my registration has been pending for a couple of hours and I need some advice quickly.
I apologize for this being so long. This is devastating. Worse than my D-Day. I have no idea how to help my children due to my wife's actions and while my path forward is clear, I need help with assisting my children through this.
History
In July of 2017, I caught my wife cheating. It was brief, but accelerated from 0 to 100 real quick. Their interaction began on Facebook messenger on a Monday. They met the Friday before at a work function. Their second meeting. Their first was a year prior at the same work function. It was local and he was a vendor for her company. Both meetings were brief and I am 100 percent sure there was nothing between them prior to or after these meetings until he contacted her the Monday after the second meeting.
The first messages were simple, hello and nice to see you again. But they talked off and on all day. The next evening he opened up with a proclamation of his attraction to her. She laughed it off at first but he continued. Two hours later she admitted to a physical attraction to him. This went on until Sunday and he arranged a hotel she joined him and it went physical. She got home and later that night ended it and apologized to him for letting it go too far. Two days later the messages start again and once again the following Sunday they meet at the same hotel. I found out that afternoon after getting on the computer and she accidentally left her Facebook logged in and and she messengered him after leaving to once again tell him they had to stop. Unlike many betrayed spouses, I had the entire affair in front of me. No doubts about what happened. No gaps. No lies. No gas lighting. I confronted her. It was bad. She immediately told him I knew and told him never to contact me.
I stayed home the next day because I was a wreck while she went to her mom's to give me space. She took my car because we had an appointment to get it serviced at dealer but I could not stand to be in the thing or to go. The affair guy found out she was not at work so came by our house to try to see her. It did not go well. I recognized him when he got out and I met him on our front porch. I beat him up bad. Enough that he lost control of bladder and bowels. I sent a picture to my wife and told her she can have him. I was arrested (neighbors witnessed it), bonded out and charges dropped because he refused to press charges. I guess he afraid his wife would find out. He told here he was mugged or some stupid crap. She eventually learned the truth because I told her.
After three years of therapy, apologies, begging, changing jobs, and, to her credit doing everything right, I felt we were over the hump. This year has been the closest to normal I have felt in three years.
Saturday Night
We were invited to a party. It was a large party given by one of our friends. We walk in and five minutes later I look across the room and there he is with some older woman I recognize but don't know (the friend of a friend of the host). My wife looks in the direction I'm looking and sees him. He notices her. My wife turns around and walks off. He gathers his date and leaves.
I choose to ignore it. My wife though starts to really get into the booze. Later in the evening she disappears and I find her drunk and alone in the driveway. She's really drunk. I while i guide her to the car, she's crying and mumbling. In the car she gets mad and starts yelling about how I have ruined her life and I've been so mean to her in the past. I'm really shocked at the outburst but due to what I learned while going through the early days of our separation I decide to start recording it on my phone and for about five minutes shes cussing me and bringing up my temper and how bad of a husband I had been. Then she says, "I can't believe you forced me to give up the love of my life. The only man that made me feel special. You beat him up and now he won't ever come near me." it went on for another five minutes and she eventually just passed out asleep. I put her in the guest room and went upstairs to try to sleep.
In the morning I had already decided on divorce. And I am still going that route. She woke up late wondering why she was in the guest room and I just cast my phone to the TV and let her watch the video. Not going to lie her reaction was devastation. I don't think she was faking. She was shocked she expressed those feeling about the guy but it didn't matter. Somewhere inside her she loved him and I WAS DONE. I AM DONE.
The problem
At the time of her affair our children were 14 and 16. They knew we were having issues and that I had moved out but they never knew why as far as I know. I never told them. They are now 17 and 19. My daughter lives two hours away in the city where she goes to college and has stayed pending re-opening of school. She has an apartment she shares with two other girls and has been almost 100% self supporting outside of school expenses which are paid by a scholarship and an account her grandparents set up for our kids. My son, who was staying with his cousin over the weekend came back home Monday to me being gone. In an attempt try and rescue our marriage my soon to be ex-wife confessed everything to them both. It was bad. My daughter absolutely will not respond to her and I understand she unloaded on her mom. My son just got up and packed a bag and called me and asked if he come stay with me. I am in currently renting a home from a real estate friend of mine. He has only said that he wants to not talk right now and I have told him that's okay. My daughter this morning reached out to me and wants to stay with me when she comes home tonight. She wants to talk face to face. I know that she and my son have been talking but I don't know what they have discussed between them.
I really don't know what to do to help them through this..wife is blowing up my phone. Other than letting her know our son is with me and safe I have not responded. I have shut it off and bought a cheap pay as you go phone. Only my kids, work, and father have the number and know where we are staying. I have taken the week off to process this and speak to a lawyer..I work from home anyway right now so it won't be too much of a strain to go back to work but there are a lot of Zoom meetings so I'm not up to people seeing me right now.
The children are my concern right now. How do you help them process this? I can't stand the thought of them hating their mother like I do right now. She's still their mother. Yes she has to live with the results of her actions but they need a relationship with their mother just as much now as they did when they were younger. Any advice to help them or at least help me not make it worse on them.

Is something happening right now? Lots of posts about JWs today in this sub and I can't tell if they're a response to something contemporary or if the sub is just on a JW kick today.

I'm sorry but even through you've rejected the JW religion, you're still carrying around some of the brainwashing they left you with.
Virtually all fundamentalist protestant sects pride themselves on biblical inerrancy and their adherence to it and by no strech of the imagination do the JWs have a unique claim to being "all-in". They pick and choose like any other as the core problem of fundamentalism is that the language of the bible is too far removed for a truly "accurate" translation in to today's understanding.
Again, and I don't mean to be so personal, but the way that you split Christianity into "generic Christian" / Catholic / JW shows that you don't understand the true diversity within Christianity. JW is about the worst example of fundamentalists that I could think of and that's not because fundamentalists are some category worth defending. And to defend more mainline chruches, evolving with the times is something that they pride themselves in and dismissing that as "picking and choosing" is the exact sort of divisive propaganda that a shunning religion like JW has indoctrinated you with.

Ex JW here. Its the worst kind of cult. It shatters family bonds in half. It leaves men with a warped sense of misogynistic power in marriage. It teaches to always self doubt because you need the a governing group of elders to tie your shoes. All free thinking is prohibited.
It is full of unbelievers who only stay out of fear of ostracism, leading to corrupt ranks of closet gays, pedophiles and spousal abusers who enjoy the cult rules that protect them from punishment.
Funny thing, they have a prophecy specifically related to government persecution. So if there happens to be widespread government crackdown on their bullshit cult they will actually redouble their recruiting efforts.
Bunch of fucking clowns.

Lol as an exjw this is a load of horseshit.
You are either woefully misinformed or lying.
You talk like a jw pretending to be a neutral party to try and put the watchtower in a good light. I used to do it too. I still have my old account I used to do this on.

Except he wasn't. December 25th is not the day Jesus was born, not even by the ancient calendar they used in his time.
December 25th was decided by the clergy to coincide with yule so Christianity would be more appealing for pagans to convert. That's also where the Christmas tree tradition comes into play, because that's a pagan tradition for yule. This a pretty common criticism that even atheists make of Christianity, bcause science and historians uncovered that long ago.
The difference between JW and other Christian denominations is that they take an extremely literal view of the bible and apply it to their lives. As in, their members are expected to actually memorize the Bible and be able to recognize and reference any verse from it. A point of pride for them is that an average JW member should be able to school any average Christian or Catholic in a spiritual debate.
While Christianity over the years has paraphrased its lessons to be more palatable and attract more converts. For JWs, if it wasn't in the bible it didn't happen. They don't believe in baby faced cherubs or the concept of heaven and hell because that stuff is not actually in the bible. The true description of Angels are actually really trippy and the bible states that Heaven is meant to be God's domain with no admittance for humans. The Heaven/Hell thing was basically the Santa Claus nice/naughty list.
I'm not a JW, but I gave them a shot because my sister is one. She wasn't forced to cut us off or anything like that. If anything, my family treated her like shit for it. They taught me what they were all about, but eventually asked that I commit to join. My sister didn't pressure me or anything, but I chose not to. The person teaching me didn't mind and my sister didn't mind. We all still talk to this day as friends. I was interested in seeing why people hated them and I still don't see it.
I've asked them directly all the questions and issues I've heard:
Asked them about their extreme view on the patriarchy and nuclear family. They told me technically that only applies as long as the husband is acting within his capacity as a true Christian. If he's being abusive or something, he is obviously no longer acting like a Christian. Under their own doctrine, he would be cast out and ostracized while the wife and family should be supported.
Asked them about their stance on Holidays: if they're not in the Bible, they don't celebrate. As in, the bible specifically has to state that they recognize holiday. The only one that applies is Easter for the resurrection. There is no biblical mandate to celebrate Christmas and Jesus was not born on the 25th of December.
Their door to door recruitment: the bible actually does state that it is the duty of a Christian to teach their faith and seek to convert as many people as possible.
For the record, I am an atheist. When I was younger, I flirted with the idea of becoming spiritual. However, that was mostly my curiosity about my sister's religion. As an organization, I'm sure the crimes and abuses are true. However, every sect of Christianity is evil and abusive at the administration and organizational level. At a grassroots, local level I respect JWs more than other Christians. At least they're all-in and not picking what's convenient for them.

Fair and reasonable answer.
Sounds like it is good you are away from that level of evil.
I’m sorry it happened to you. I was challenging a jw over shunning and they said “ that’s is the past we don’t do that anymore “ which is theocratic warfare, I’m not a jw so it is good to lie to my face. Amazing. wt teach that.

As an Ex-Catholic atheist with a close JW coworker, I basically agree with your take.
  • Jesus was most likely not born on Dec 25th.
  • JWs often have much of the Bible memorized
  • Few holidays, no birthday celebrations.
  • Heaven and Hell concept is separate from common view point.
At a grassroots, local level I respect JWs more than other Christians
I think you're getting some criticism about this, but I get what your saying. To me, I have seen many people who claim to be Christians. They go to church, maybe donate or whatever, but for them it's just a club with social perks and a sense of self-righteousness. It seems almost superficial. It's not the core of their life. In the case of JWs and a handful of other denominations, this behavior appears less common (although still present).

I was forced by my mom to go to the kingdom hall (church) when I was young. Probably from 8-14 years old. I actually never really experience any of the cult stuff that everyone talks about. I always thought they were nice people, just really really into their beliefs. The worst part was going door to door witnessing. It felt so embarrassing as a child and if I saw one of my school friends, I would be made fun of at school.
I was young so I probably didn't notice everything going on around me.
During this pandemic the church services are done through Zoom and they don't go door to door witnessing. I commend them for this.

I know a woman.. or used to know a woman who was an ex-JW. She had 2 kids. She was very liked by a lot of people in the local community. She took her own life, because she was harrased by JW's. It became too much for her. She literally talked to a priest (protestant) for 2 hours everyday the last month of her life, because she couldn't handle it much more. She made several posts on social media, about how her children were the only reason she was alive. You could tell something was wrong.
It was so sad, when we heard about the news about her suicide.

I dated a JW once. It was both of our first gay relationship. Not ashamed of my sexuality but he very much was. The guilt took a HUGE toll on him. There was a lot of emotional abuse and one instance of physical that I let slide because it broke my heart knowing what he was dealing with inside. I tried everything I could to be supportive but when the relationship got to real he'd pull away. I wouldn't react in the best of ways as seeing my first and probably only love slip away was terrifying. I had no idea what JW's were or what the stood for before I met him. After a constant cycle of guilt then breaking up with me cause of it I was left completely broken and shattered after finding out he was also a sex addict and was cheating on me with other guys. They have a great way of making you feel wrong. You can't argue with them because they are literally trained to win debates and arguments and when something doesn't fit their narrative they are quick to shut the conversation down. We'll never speak again....I think about him a lot and wish I was able to atleast have a distant friendship with him but he's fully gone.
They're pretty heartless people, I guess when you can easily cut out anyone in your family cause they don't agree with you they don't get to feel what true unconditional love is. I didn't care what he believed in or what he thought to be the truth was. I just wanted to see him happy with life and himself. He was my best friend...I hope he found some peace.

That's not correct.
JW doctrine takes an extreme literal interpretation of the Bible and applies it to their lives. Generic Christianity paraphrases the bible to fit their narrative.
For example: December 25th is not the day Jesus was born. This is a fact. Christianity invented Christmas to coincide with Yule so pagans would be more likely to convert if they can still practice their tradition. That's actually where the Christmas tree tradition comes from because pagans would raise trees in honor of Tyr during yule celebrations.
A more correct statement is that Christianity is similar to JW doctrine. I'm not saying JWs are better, but they are the same brand of corruption and evil.
