2020.09.27 23:48 TastefulDrapes Garageband suddenly refuses to open after updating iTunes

Hi all. After updating my phone to iOS 14, I plugged it into my computer to add some music and iTunes on my Macbook Pro said it needed to update to be able to connect with my phone. I said okay, and the update went fine. The problem is that now I can't open Garageband (it's an old Macbook with an old version of Garageband, see below). When I try, I get an error box that says:
GarageBand cannot be opened because of a problem.
Check with the developer to make sure GarageBand works with this version of OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and OS X.
Click Report to see more detailed information and send a report to Apple.
I've never had this problem even once before and this computer has been running with this version of Garageband for a LONG time, so I suspect the iTunes update is to blame. Please help!!! I still use Garageband all of the time and I quite like the version I've got!
When I click "Report," I get the following (excluding the very lengthy Binary Image segment):

2020.09.24 19:06 SharkRiderCola New Build - Weird Reboot Error Beeps

Hello guys,
I'm encountering what could only be described as a "weird" problem on a new build, and seeing as this is the first build I do myself, I thought someone over here might have a clue what's happening.
I decided to upgrade my old rig, as it was running on i5 6600 and 24 gb of DDR4 RAM (from 2 different 2x4 sets) and I already bought a RTX2070 Super, so the CPU was bottlenecking the gpu.
I went for a ASUS B550-PLUS TUF as the Motherboard, with a Ryzen 3700x as the CPU, 32GB of DDR4 RAM (2x16 module) from Corsair - Vengeance RGB PRO 3200Mhz CL 16 and a M2 SSD for Windows and Adobe apps (Corsair Force MP510). The OS is original, up to date.
When I first booted the new build, it had a problem during any restarts - from Bios exit, from windows installer, even from rebooting from windows. It would give 3 short beeps, and then it would shut down, but I needed to turn the Power Source off and then on to be able to boot again. Seemed like an error code for RAM.
The reset button also didn't work, which made me look into the panel section on the motherboard. After reseating the Reset connecter, the problem when away.
That is until now. If I restart the pc from Windows, or from the Reset button, it works without problem. BUT, if there is any pending restart (for example, you install a Software and it says restart needed to use this program) then it restarts, but first gives one long beep and 2 short beeps (which seems to be the error code for GPU?!). Then it kind of does nothing for a few seconds, after which it boots normally with no problem. The issue seems to have started after upgrading to the latest nVidia driver.
I know this isn't a big issue, but since this is a new Build I want to make sure it doesn't have any problem that might affect it in the long run.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions and sorry if this post is too long or my english is a little bad.
EDIT: Now it does so without a pending restart. While giving the beep error code mentioned above, the DRAM led on the motherboard lights Yellow. It did so for every restart. After I shut the pc down and then booted again, the issue didn't happen. Seems like it happens after the pc stays on for a number of hours - could it be RAM related? No problems in games or editing software.

2020.09.23 05:41 iSinghSongs AirPods Pro will only work on one bud when connected to MacBook Pro

Hello AirPods Pro fam!
After hours of troubleshooting and calling Apple to no avail, I am hoping to get your insights with this issue.
I have had my AirPods Pro around release date, and I love it and haven't had any issues up until today. Every time I would try to connect my AirPods Pro to my MacBook Pro, only the left AirPod would play music and the right AirPod would be silent. But here's the kicker: when I put the left AirPod Pro back in the case, but leave my right AirPod in my ear, then it starts working. When I take the left AirPod Pro out of the case, then the music starts playing in that AirPod only and the cycle repeats itself. All the other functions like activating noise cancelling and pausing music works fine on both AirPods. Plus I can also see the battery percentages on both AirPods on the bluetooth settings on the MacBook Pro, so both AirPods connect to the computer. It's the weirdest thing. Besides the latest AirPods Pro update last week, I have no clue what triggered this. Even after the update happened it was working fine.
What makes it even weirder that when I connect the AirPods Pro to my iPhone, it works completely fine.
Wait I'm not done: I have a backup first gen AirPods, and when I connect those to the MacBook Pro, it also works completely fine.
I tried just about every trick in the apple support book: forgetting the device on the MacBook Pro and re-pairing it, resetting the AirPods Pro itself, even resetting the bluetooth module on the MacBook Pro. Nothing has worked so far.
I would appreciate your insights if anyone has had this problem before! Let me know if I can provide any clarifying info!
Thank you so much in advance for your help!

2020.09.18 09:44 XMG_gg XMG Gaming Laptops: First Steps & Troubleshooting

So you got yourself an XMG Gaming Laptop laptop, huh?

Congratulations! :-)
Follow this handy guide to go through your first steps and some commonly recurring questions. This guide is pretty long and might look frightening on first look, but please note:
  • Sometimes it's not a bug, it might be a feature
  • Sometimes a thing might be caused by Windows or might be a known issue for a generic hardware components (including NVIDIA Optimus), i.e.: not caused by us
  • Some issues covered in this guide are extremely rare, have only been reported once or twice and might be very easy to fix

+++ BREAKING: Fix "No Speaker" issue on XMG FUSION 15 +++

Windows Update has recently brought us a "No speakers, no sound" issue on XMG FUSION 15. Please read all about the solution in this post. This should only be a temporary condition and solved soon by pulling the incompatible driver from Windows Update. Update: incompatible driver has been pulled on May 19, 2020. New driver going to be rolled out shortly.

Now, moving on to the actual content of this thread:

I unboxed my XMG Laptop – what are my first steps?

1. If you purchased with Windows.
When building our laptops, we always make sure to install the latest firmware and drivers. If you purchased with Windows, all drivers will already be installed and you can pretty much start working. NVIDIA updates their driver pretty often, so they might already have a new driver out. Open up GeForce Experience, log into your account and see if the app offers any driver updates.
2. If you purchased without operating system.
Your SSD will be empty, but your firmware will be up to date. Even if you purchase without operating system, we will already have updated the latest BIOS and latest Thunderbolt firmware. Now it’s time to install Windows and install our drivers.
If you don’t have your own Windows install media at hand, you can get the latest official version from here. The drivers for your XMG Laptop will be on a USB thumb drive in your shipping box. If you want to make absolutely sure that you’re getting the latest drivers, download them each by each from our download portal. Both sources will include a PDF file that will guide you through each step. The only tricky step is the Audio driver, where you’ll have to do a specific install and reboot sequence. This is explained in detail in the PDF file.

++ Troubleshooting (all models) +++

The following items might apply to any XMG or SCHENKER model. In fact, they might also apply to laptops from other brands. Further down below, you'll find a section that is more specific to individual models.

My battery life is less than it should be / I have high Idle power consumption / My fans are loud in Idle / my dGPU is not turning off.

Battery life and power consumption are closely interconnected. If your system consumes too much power – even in Idle – your battery life will suffer.
Preliminary: check your CPU usage, sorted by tasks
Your first look should be into Windows Task Manager, tab "Details" and then sort by "CPU" usage. You should know that your CPU has multiple cores and threads. For example, on i7-9750H (6 cores, 12 threads) if one single-thread task is running at 100%, it translates to "only" 8% CPU load in Task Manager (100 divided by 12 = 8.33). 8% might not look like much at first glance. But in reality it's one core that is running at maximum speed, taking almost as much power as if all cores would run at the same time. This is because the CPU would boost a single core to much higher speed than it would boost all cores together.
In other words: CPU usage values in Task Manager can be misleading, especially if some broken or badly programmed software is going rogue on a single thread. Do the math!
So, on a 6 core CPU, if you have any process in Task Manager constantly running at 8%, something is off. Please identify which task it is, and either end it right there it or uninstall the related software altogether.
Another way to check is to separate the Task Manager CPU activity graph into logical cores. Check these two screenshots:
In my example you can see one core in the middle was almost maxed out for a short amount of time. Thanks to the nature of Turbo Boost, this core would induce a boosted clock speed, leading to almost maxed-out power consumption and high temperatures. This is not always immediately visible because most programs would keep jumping from core to core, so you always see individual spikes to 100% on single core. You can try this yourself by using Prime95 and running it on only 1 thread.
All systems nominal? CPU is nice and idle? Check the dGPU status.
If you don't have any rogue tasks clogging up you CPU but your Idle power consumption is still off the charts, it might be because your NVIDIA GPU (dedicated GPU, dGPU) is not turning itself off.
Under the system of NVIDIA Optimus (MSHybrid), all common Windows apps are run on the Intel UHD Graphics (integrated GPU, iGPU) by default and the dedicated GPU (dGPU) should turn itself off when it is not needed. This removes the dGPU from the power source but it also saves power on the CPU side, because the CPU can turn off the PCI-Express x16 dGPU connection and thus achieve lower sleep states in each CPU cycle. This system can be disturbed in a number of ways, leading to higher power consumption which in turn leads to lower battey life.
1. Check which system monitoring tools you are running in the background
Some system monitoring software intentionally wakes up the dGPU. Keeping such software running in the background will inevitably lead to higher power consumption. We will keep a list of tools here which do and which do not keep the dGPU awake.
Does not keep the dGPU awake Keeps the dGPU awake
CoreTemp AIDA64 (only when “Sensor” pane is open)
Intel Extreme Tuning Utility CPUID HWMonitor
NVIDIA Control Panel MSI Afterburner
Speccy NVIDIA GeForce Experience
TechPowerUp Real Temp NVIDIA Inspector
ThrottleStop NZXT CAM
Windows Task Manager Open Hardware Monitor
TechPowerUp GPU-Z
XMG Control Center (only when “System Monitor” pane is open)
Please check if any of the programs on the right side of the table is running in the background on your machine. If they are, please remove them from Startup in the Task Manager.
Some of the programs on the left side of the table might wake up the dGPU once for a few seconds during initialization. But according to our testing, they won’t keep the dGPU awake during normal operation.
If you want to see, whether or not your dGPU is awake or not, the best bet is to use the “Sensors” function in HWiNFO64 and keep an eye on the GPU Temperature of your NVIDIA GeForce card. If the temperature reads 0°C, the dGPU is sleeping. With a right click on the Temperature value, you can even set up an alarm in form of a sound file, notification popup or logfile entry if the temperature reaches a value ≥ 1.
2. If external monitor is connected, dGPU will be awake.
Both HDMI and USB-C/DisplayPort/Thunderbolt are connected directly to the NVIDIA GeForce card. This dedicated connection gives the XMG FUSION 15 the power to drive very high resolutions, refresh rates and to support G-SYNC and FreeSync on external screens. The trade-off: the dGPU will always be awake as soon as an external monitor is connected. Rendering can still happen on the iGPU (Intel UHD Graphics) - but the dGPU will always be "awake" to deliver the pixels to the screen.
3. The choice of running apps on iGPU vs. dGPU has to be done in Windows Graphics settings now.
Microsoft is taking over the NVIDIA Optimus (MSHybrid) control from NVIDIA. On latest Windows builds and NVIDIA drivers, the NVIDIA driver now shoes a very small warning notification:
Windows OS now manages selection of the graphics processor. Open Windows graphics settings
If you notice that certain apps wake up the dGPU, please see if you can assign them to the internal graphics in this new Windows setting dialogue. Please note that the aforementioned benchmark and system monitoring apps apps will override/ignore this setting anyway. But it should work fine for most if not all productivity apps and games.
4. Every app is running on dGPU as soon as external monitor is connected? No.
NVIDIA’s Control Center has a hidden function called “NVIDIA GPU Activity” which supposedly shows which app is being rendered on the dGPU. You can find it by enabling "Display GPU Activity Monitor Icon in Notification Area".
Unfortunately, this function is not accurate when using an external monitor. As soon as you have an external monitor connected, the notification window shows every newly launched app as if it’s being rendered on the dGPU, even though it is not. This has been confirmed by our NVIDIA contacts to be a general issue that affects all laptops with NVIDIA Optimus (MSHybrid) of every brand.
It does not look as if NVIDIA has any plans to resolve this issue. Therefor, the “NVIDIA GPU Activity” will continue to show inaccurate information and should rather not be used at all.
5. dGPU does not go back to sleep after disconnecting external screen while browser is open
If you launch your browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge) while you are connected to an external screen, the browser’s hardware acceleration will use the dGPU. This happens despite the fact that you are forcing that app to run on Integrated Graphics. If the browser keeps running after you connect the external screen, it will keep the dGPU awake.
Even sending the laptop to Standby and waking it up again won’t change that fact. The dGPU will only go back to sleep after you close the specific app that triggered this behaviour.
This seems to affect every laptop with NVIDIA Optimus (MSHybrid) – not only XMG laptops.
We have filed a report with NVIDIA and we are awaiting their feedback.
Here is a short list of apps that are affected and not affected by this issue:
Affected Not affected (Control Group)
Google Chrome Microsoft Word
Mozilla Firefox notepad.exe
Microsoft Edge
This might also affect other apps if they are secretly using the dGPU for Hardware Acceleration. But so far, the 3 major browsers are the only apps we have confirmed to trigger this behaviour.
According to what we heard, NVIDIA does not seem to have any plans to fix this issue on a fundamental basis.
Workaround #1: Restart your Browser
Close your browser and launch it again after disconnecting from the external screen.
Workaround #2: Disable Hardware Acceleration in Browser
You can find this in the Settings menu of your Browser.
Workaround #3: Disable and re-enable the dGPU instead of closing your Webbrowser
Download here: dGpuCycle
Written by Notebookcheck user ‘Stepon’ (source). You can open the script with Notepad to read the source code.
After disconnecting the external screen, run this Batch Script with Admin privileges. The script will disable and re-enable the dGPU in Device Manager. During that moment, your browser will drop the Hardware Acceleration from dGPU and go back to iGPU. Chrome will flicker for a fraction of a second. If you play any videos on your browser while running the script, you might have to restart playback by jumping to a different point in the video timeline.
With some programming skills can be further automated to always run in the background.
6. Same as above, but for most if not all apps that use a browser engine underneath.
The browser hardware acceleration issue applies to apps that are using a browser engine to create their GUI. If you launch such an app while you're connected to an external monitor, they will use the dGPU for hardware acceleration and won't let go of it until you either close the app or manually disable the dGPU. The most popular such apps are:
  • Microsoft Teams
  • Microsoft Visual Code
  • Slack
  • Discord
  • Spotify
The most widespread framework for such apps is Electron, but it's not limited to that. For example, Spotify uses a different implementation, based on Chromium browser engine.
We are not aware of any way to disable hardware acceleration on these apps. Disabling hardware acceleration in your browser won't affect those apps. The only workarounds are:
  • Start the apps before you connect your external screen
  • Restart the apps after you connect your external screen
  • Disable and re-enable the dGPU with the above dGpuCycle script
As with other root causes in this section, this seems to apply to every laptop with NVIDIA Optimus. We have asked NVIDIA to comment in April 2020.
7. Outdated Killer Wi-Fi driver increasing power consumption.
We had a report where an outdated Killer Wi-Fi suite caused high background CPU load. If you are using a Rivet Networks Killer Wi-Fi module, please download and install the latest drivers here.
8. Missing NVIDIA USB-C and Audio drivers keep the dGPU awake?
We have a report from a user who made a custom install of NVIDIA drivers and unselected the NVIDIA USB-C and Audio drivers because he thought we won't need them. In this case, not having those drivers will cause the main driver to not shutdown the dGPU when searching for those two drivers. We were not able to reproduce it but we'll leave it in this guide for future reference. Solution: reinstall NVIDIA drivers and include every driver, even the optional ones.
9. Outdated Windows and firmware?
If you haven’t already, make sure you are running the latest Windows updates and the latest BIOS. Some major Windows milestones (also called “Redstone” updated) need to be triggered manually by opening Windows Updates, then “Checking for updates”. Under “Optional updates”, there might be a “Feature update” which you can initiate with “Download and install now” (screenshot).
10. Third party PCIe/NVMe SSD preventing CPU from sleeping?
We had recently a few reports on budget SSDs from smaller brands preventing the CPU from reaching C8 sleep states, severely cutting battery life. If you upgrades your SSD yourself with a model that is not listed in our online shop, please consider to swap it out, re-install Windows from scratch and try again. If you found your SSD to be the culprit, please share the product name with us.
11. Corsair iCue Software causes +10W power consumption?
We have seen this report from multiple users. This one was the first:
I spent a week trying to figure out why the processor on my Fusion 15 was consuming so much power when idle (around 10W!). My battery life was absolutely abysmal at about 2.5 hours on a full charge. I thought I had ruled out the iCue software because I closed the app completely, but it turns out only a complete uninstall will allow everything to return to normal so it must have been the mouse driver itself rather than the iCue software.
We haven't checked it ourselves but any kind of hardware-related 3rd party software could potentially cause power saving issues on any system.
12. Epic Games Launcher running on dGPU
First reported here]. Solution is in the top reply to that thread.
13. Paint 3D causes the dGPU to stay 'ON' by running in the Background, even after Reboot
This seems to be a real issue based on a bug from Microsoft. Check this thread for details.
14. Other reason? Cannot reach CPU Package C8 Residency? Please take part in our survey
Please read this post for an introduction into CPU Package C8 Residency states. The post includes a link to a survey to collect analytical data from users who just can't get their power consumption down despite already having implemented all prior suggestions.
15. Dig deeper? Check out this amazing in-depth guide about Windows power saving optimization and C-States.
Written by user Che0063 on Notebookreview in 2018 and constantly updated into 2020, this guide is a deep dive into all things C-States.

Random short spikes in lag and stutter

Intel Driver and Support Assistant (DSA) is acting up, causing CPU spikes up to 40% every 1-5 minutes.
Taken from this post:
Intel Driver and Support Assistant (DSA) is acting up, causing CPU spikes up to 40% every 1-5 minutes. See this picture of task manager cumulative CPU time. Funny you already mentioned that it stopped working, as I experienced the same thing.
Solution (TL;DR):
Uninstall Intel DSA for now. You can do this via the windows Apps and Programs, or if it fails for any reason, download the official Uninstaller from the intel website.

My laptop randomly wakes up from Standby.

1. Firmware solution for Wake-up 3 hours after entering Sleep/Standby. (XMG FUSION 15 only)
There was an issue with the NVIDIA USB-C driver which caused the laptop to wake up exactly 3 hours after entering Standby. The laptop was trying to transition into Hibernate (Suspend to Disk) but failed to do so. This issue is resolved in BIOS 0062 and beyond.
2. Disable Wake timers (applies to any PC and Laptop)
Depending on your Windows configuration, there might be certain task schedules (including Windows Updates) which prompt the laptop to wake-up from Sleep or Hibernate. To check on these issues, please read this article. The most common solution is to disable the “Allow wake timers” option for both “plugged in” and “on-battery”. Please note: this setting depends on each power profile and your laptop has three of them: Silent, Balanced, Enthusiast. Please switch to each of these profiles and modify “Allow wake timer” in the Advanced settings in Windows power options for each one of these.
3. Check the Wake-up cause
There is a simple command that will tell you the reason why your laptop woke up for the last time. Usually this is something like "Power Button" or "Lid Opening", but in your case it might point to a different driver or Windows component. Find "Command Prompt" in Start Menu and type:
powercfg -lastwake
This command does not need Admin right. Please copy it by marking the output text and pressing Enter. The marked text from the Command Prompt windows is now in your clipboard and can be pasted into a text file or message box. Alternatively you can take a picture and report back to us.

My laptop needs a long time to boot up.

Cold Boot and Wake-up from Hibernate should not take much more than 12 seconds between pressing the power button and seeing the login screen wallpaper. If your laptop takes much longer, please consider the following options.
1. Enable “Fast Boot”.
Enabling “Fast Boot” in BIOS is a requirement to use Microsoft’s “Hybrid Boot” technology which saves a lot of time on Cold Boot. Before shipping, we always enable “Fast Boot” in all XMG laptops – but it might get disabled by user operation. On some models, it might also get disabled during BIOS Reset. To make sure, you have “Fast Boot” enabled, follow these steps:
  • Reboot and enter BIOS Setup [F2]
  • Open [Boot] menu and enter [Boot Priority]
  • Find [Fast Boot] and set it to [Enabled]
  • Back in [Exit] category, select [Save Changes and Exit], Reboot
(the location of the "Fast Boot" option might be slightly, depending on your model)
2. Flash firmware again
You can clearly seperate the boot process between BIOS time and Windows time. Everything that happens before you see the XMG boot logo is BIOS time. On XMG FUSION 15, it usually takes about 7 seconds between pressing the power button and seeing the XMG boot logo for the first time. If this time period is much, much longer in your case, the root cause might be in hardware or firmware.
One potential solution was found in this post. This user already had a system with Thunderbolt Firmware NVM v56. But based on a hunch, he just tried to update the same firmware again and it instantly fixed his long BIOS time.
It makes kind of sense. VBIOS, Thunderbolt... those are large, complex and kind of external components that are initialized in the very early steps of the the BIOS. If anything is stalling there, you won't see the boot logo because the BIOS hasn't even attempted yet to start talking to the SSD.
Rule of thumb: if you have long BIOS time before you see the XMG logo, please consider to flash the BIOS and the Thunderbolt Firmware again.
Now, let's look at various Windows-based causes:
3. Clean up TEMP folders
Taken from this post.
Found out, during each boot Windows (namely it's ProfSvc service) takes everything you have in users/yourprofile folder and writes over those files. I suspect it's changing some meta data in the files. Probably edditing read/write premissions. But it goes one by one. And logon process waits for it to finish. As long as your computer is relatively clean, this operation takes a second or two. But when Visual Studio update "forgets" 160 000 files in your AppData/Temp folder, it results in 35 secs of profile loading during boot. All I needed was to empty the Temp folder and the bootups are back in normal!
You can either clean the Temp folders manually or use a software like CCleaner. Please beware, we would only recommend CCleaner to clean temp files, but don't clean the Windows Registry. It's usually safe to do but it can sometimes lead to false positive situations and side-effects.
4. Riot Games 'Vanguard' might block one of our drivers
If you have game titles from Riot Games installed, the software 'Vanguard' might be blocking the 'inpoutx64.sys' driver on some of our systems. This driver is related to the Control Center. We have heard of one single case where the presence of Vanguard lead to a significantly increased boot-time. In other cases however, it had no effect despite getting the 'Vanguard has blocked' message in Windows.
We will share this information with our ODM to see if our signed inpoutx64.sys/dll can be whitelisted. Meanwhile, please consider disabling or uninstalling Vanguard to see if it improves your boot time.
5. Consider a clean reinstall
It might be inconvenient, but if you have any boot times that are wildly longer than above reference data, please consider a clean Windows installation. 'Clean' means deleting the system partitions on your SSD in the first step of the installation procedure. Before you do this, you should backup all important data on external storage.
6. Other causes.
If your system still takes a long time to even display the XMG boot logo or to boot into the Login prompt, there might be another issue at hand. Please make sure to update your BIOS, load setup defaults, enable “Fast Boot” again and make sure that your Windows and drivers are up to date. Please also consider to follow the generic advice in this article.
There is currently no other known systematic issue that prevents our laptops from doing a fast boot or fast wake-up. If you cannot resolve the issue on your machine, please consider to backup your data and do a clean Windows re-install.
7. Discussion
For XMG FUSION 15 we have opened a dedicated tread about expected boot times after a clean install. Please move all relevant discussion to this thread:
Thank you!

My microphone does not sound right

(I might be using Discord)
First, please make sure you increased the microphone gain to 100% and added the +20dB boost.
  • Find "Sound settings" in Start menu
  • Scroll down and click on "Sound Control Panel"
  • Select "Recording" tab and double-click your microphone
  • Select "Levels" tab and put everything to maximum (screenshot)
Now, some apps including Discord put additional processing on the microphone, including echo and noise cancellation. This can have a negative effect on microphone audio quality. Please see if you can disable all such options from your chat application and from the Realtek Control Panel.

I have random Bluescreens

Bluescreens can have a number of reasons. Sometimes, the error message or driver reference can already point at a root cause. If there are too many possible root causes, here are some generic tips.
  • If you have Undervolting in BIOS, disable it (set it to Zero)
  • Update your BIOS
  • Reset your BIOS (Load Defaults)
  • Make sure you have all drivers installed correctly (at least no yellow exclamation marks in Device Manager)
  • Make sure you are not running any 3rd party system software or drivers
  • Consider to do a clean Reinstall of Windows
  • Test your RAM with MemTest86, booted from USB
How to use MemTest86 to test my RAM
Follow these steps:
  • Download MemTest 86 Free from here (you do not need to purchase the Pro version)
  • This will download a file called "". Extract it to a new sub-folder
  • Plug-in your USB stick. Make sure there is no important data. The next steps will delete all data on your USB stick.
  • In the new folder, run imageUSB.exe and confirm the Admin prompt
  • You will be greeted with this interface. Confirm the Drive Letter of your empty USB Stick
  • Click the "Write" button and read and confirm all prompts
  • With the USB stick successfully prepared, reboot your laptop and enter BIOS Setup (F2)
  • Make sure your laptop charging cable is plugged-in and connected to external power
  • Find and disable "Secure Boot" and "Fast Boot". Those are the only options you need to change. Enabling CSM or Legacy Mode is not required for this version of MemTest
  • Save & Exit from your BIOS setup. During the reboot hold F10 (XMG FUSION 15) or F7 (all other laptops) to enter the Boot Media Selection prompt
  • Select your USB drive from the Boot Media menu
  • MemTest86 will start automatically and look like this. If any errors are detected, take a picture of the screen and contact support
  • If you complete the first pass (Pass: 1 / 4) without any errors, there is a good chance that you won't see any additional errors and you can cancel the test and reboot with Ctrl+Alt+Del. When in doubt, you can also run it overnight with multiple passes. On a typical gaming laptop, running MemTest86 will constantly pull about 100W out of the wall socket
  • When you finish your tests, go back to BIOS Setup to undo earlier changes or just Load Defaults to reset everything
PRO TIP: If you have MemTest86 errors, you can try to open your laptop and test both memory modules individually. Remove one module and run the test again. If the errors only show on one of the modules, try the same module again in the other (empty) RAM slot. If the module shown errors when run individually in both of the RAM slots, it might be indeed faulty.
If the RAM modules are actually not faulty, it can sometimes also help to just remove and replace (reseat) them. Sometimes, if they are not properly connected, they might also prompt random errors including iGPU graphics artifacts.

+++ Troubleshooting XMG FUSION 15 (2019) +++

The following items apply only to XMG FUSION 15. Please check first if your issue is covered under the general section above. The latest BIOS and Control Center update can be found in this thread.

My speaker sound is underwhelming / I cannot get Soundblaster Connect running.

Sound Blaster Connect is an important app to improve the experience of the audio system. It can increase volume (SmartVol) and Bass of the speakers.
1. Reinstall Audio drivers in the proper sequence
Normally, when all pre-requisites are met, Soundblaster Connect should install automatically from Windows. You can then find it with a simple search for “Sound Blaster” in the Windows Start menu. If Sound Blaster Connect is no where to be found or if it only shows an empty screen, please follow the sequence precisely:
  • No prior steps necessary – you do not need to uninstall prior packages
  • Please download the Audio drivers again from our download portal
  • You only need the file “AudioDriver_Package_3-in-1“
  • Extract the ZIP Archive
  • Install Audio-with-SST and reboot Windows (!)
  • Install Soundblaster-EQ
  • Install Soundblaster-Creative_Audio_Effects
If you are connected to the Internet, the system will now automatically install "Sound Blaster Connect" from Microsoft Store. This might take a few minutes or more. When in doubt, reboot once more after the Soundblaster-Creative_Audio_Effects.

My touchpad sometimes does not react.

This is a very rare issue that we have encountered a few times. For some users we have fixed it by replacing the laptop. The root cause is not entirely clear yet but there have been a few successful workarounds.
Solution #1: Set Touchpad to “Most Sensitive”
Find the “Touchpad” settings in Windows Start menu and change the sensitivity setting to “Most Sensitive”. Please report via PM with your order number if this fixes the issue for you.
Solution #2: Reinstall BIOS and Control Center
We have reports from users who got rid of any Touchpad issues by reinstalling the BIOS and Control Center. Please get the appropriate downloads from our Download Portal.

My CPU shows high activity in idle while having devices connected to USB-C port.

We are currently tracking an issue where users have reported >10% CPU usage in Idle while having certain devices connected to the USB-C port.
Current Workaround: Disable Automatic Sleep on Thunderbolt controller
Device Manager > System devices > Thunderbolt Controller > Power Management > Disable "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"

I’m unable to turn off my keyboard backlight during boot.

Normally, if you disable the keyboard backlight in Control Center using the slider switch, it should also be disabled during Reboot, Cold Boot etc. We had one report of a rare issue where this settings was not applied to firmware anymore. If you encounter this issue, please click the “Restore” button in Control Center to reset all you Keyboard Backlight settings. Then, try again to disable the Keyboard Backlight and reboot.

My keyboard backlight is not turning on anymore.

We had a few reports of keyboard backlight not being able to turn on anymore. If you encounter this issue, please reset your BIOS settings.
  • Reboot and enter BIOS Setup [F2]
  • Open [Exit] menu; select and confirm [Restore Defaults] but do not reboot yet
  • Open [Boot] menu and enter [Boot Priority]
  • Find [Fast Boot] and set it to [Enabled]
  • Back in [Exit] category, select [Save Changes and Exit], Reboot

I cannot access my BIOS Setup (F2) anymore.

This is another very rare issue that was only reported once so far. If you cannot access your BIOS Setup, you cannot do a BIOS Reset anymore.
Solution: Remove CMOS Jumper from Mainboard and Reboot
The mainboard of XMG FUSION 15 has a jumper to control the BIOS Reset. In order to reach this jumper, you will need to remove the bottom case of the laptop. This is as easy as removing the 10 screws on the bottom side and then simply lifting the bottom cover away from the laptop.
The jumper is located next to the WiFi module
If the jumper is removed, the laptop will show a special menu after on boot which will allow you to reset the BIOS Settings to Default.
After having done this Reset, please place the jumper again it it's original position, connecting pins "1" and "2" as seen in the "Top View" picture linked above.
Now, please see if you can now get back into BIOS Setup with the F2 key during boot.

My external USB mouse sometimes stops moving.

We have some reports from USB gaming mouse with ≥1000Hz polling rate that sometimes stop working when used together with USB hubs, both on USB-A and USB-C (Thunderbolt).
Please install the latest official drivers from your mouse vendor and see if you can reduce the polling rate to 500Hz to see if it makes any difference.

My system consumes about 1~2% battery in Standby/Sleep mode

This is normal and also affects both XMG FUSION and XMG NEO series with opto-mechanical keyboard. Reason: the keyboard consumes slightly over 1W even in standby, because it is still firing up the Infrared barriers for every individual switch. This is to make sure that the keyboard can wake the system from standby. This translates to a power consumption (witch charger, measured at wall socket) of up to 1.8W in Standby if the battery is already fully charged. Due to a hardware design constraint, the power of the keyboard switches cannot be turned off, unless the system is sent to Hibernate (S4) or Shutdown (S5).
Workaround: use Hibernate. By default, Standby automatically transitions into Hibernate after 180 minutes. You can shorten this timespan in the Advanced Power Options in Windows (Screenshot). You have to do this for each of the Performance Profiles that you use (Silent, Balanced, Enthusiast). Before that, you have to enable Hibernate in this menu.

I would like to improve my DPC Latencies.

For guaranteed low DPC latencies, please check out our SCHENKER Audio Editions. For all other models, we're going to collect a number of tips here over time.

I have issues with USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 adapters on XMG FUSION 15

XMG FUSION 15 (2019, XFU15L19) had a bit of a shaky history with some USB-C adapters and Thunderbolt Docking Stations. It seems like the most serious issues have been ironed out with BIOS 0064 and Thunderbolt Firmware-Update NVM v56. If you plan to use USB-C port and you purchased your laptop before May 2020, please make sure to update your firmware as explained in this thread:

2020.09.16 23:25 L337Fool 2020 Game Streaming Services Review: Xcloud is utter garbage when compared to Stadia or just about anything else.

To give a little background on my position I will share my experience. I utilize a 1Gbps fiber connection to the internet in Texas for streaming. I run these services on a Galaxy S10 (stand alone w/Kishi and DeX), a Hisense H9F Android TV, and an upgraded Razer Edge Pro PC (with control module and dock). The following views come from a paying subscriber's perspective. I am a Stadia Founder, a current Shadow subscriber, a Game Pass Ultimate PC subscriber and formerly a Geforce Now (GFN) Founder. Right now I game about 50/50 between Stadia and Shadow. Admittedly, I use Shadow more because it also functions as a powerful mobile graphics workstation for me. I'm going to touch on some common points about these services and maybe some uncommon ones based on the gear I use. I'd also like to get something out of the way before I get started. If I had to choose just one service to keep out of all of those mentioned above it would be Shadow without a doubt. That being said nothing beats the streaming gaming experience on Stadia from my point of view.
Resolution, Framerate, Color quality: 1st - Stadia 2nd - Shadow 3rd - GFN 4th - Xcloud
Stadia's 4k 60fps HDR capabilities making it the best in its class for streaming gameplay. This is especially apparent on a Chromecast Ultra where the experience is more consistent (various hardware and software factors on PC can effect performance) . Shadow is capable of limited 4k (no hdr support with limited framerate performance) and newer packages which I haven't tested yet are rolling out but aren't commonly available enough yet to consider as a feature of the service yet. GFN is capped at FHD (1080p) at 60fps with no HDR support currently to the best of my knowledge but it performed well when I used it. Xcloud runs at 720p 60fps but poorly with plenty of artifacts and image distortion. It is dead last by a long margin due to inferior video stream quality that offers neither quality or consistency.
Overall Hardware Support (Play Anywhere) 1st- Shadow 2nd- GFN 3rd- Stadia 4th- Xcloud
Shadows has officially support apps across every major hardware platform (PC, Android, and Android TV). There are no controller restrictions and wireless devices are supported. Shadow can also be scaled by the user through the application to fit almost any scenario (ex: Wireless, Mobile data). It is also relatively easy to jump across different Hardware in the same session. It also has a dedicated hardware platform, the Shadow Ghost. GFN has official apps on Android and PC but will require a sideload to use on Android TV. GFN is also scalable through the application though not quite at the same level as Shadow (ex: no codec options). It also performs well on most modern Android TVs. It has a dedicated hardware platform, the Nvidia Shield. Stadia is a really close runner up here to GFN and supports many of the same options but doesn't really perform as well on mobile data. This could improve in the future and use of the platform over mobile data is relatively new and considered experimental. Xcloud comes in dead last here too. Xcloud only officially supports Android. It can be sideloaded to Android TV but doesn't perform nearly as well as GFN, Shadow, or Stadia on most TVs. You also better know what APK your hardware supports and hope the app shows up in your app menu once you sideload and install it. In best case scenarios wifi and supported hardware Xcloud runs acceptably but beyond that it is a mess of stuttering and subpar image quality. Xcloud is also cropped which is obvious on larger displays. There is no application for Xcloud on PC at this time.
Game Library: 1st - Shadow 2nd - Stadia 3rd - GFN 4th - Xcloud
Shadow is hands down the winner here as it is a full featured PC with nearly no limitation on what you can play to include mods of existing games. Some newer anti cheats on modern games such a Valorant block play on Shadow but they are few and far between. While GFN does edge out Stadia in quantity there are some caveats that place it behind Stadia overall. There are no guarantees with what games will maintain developer approval on GFN. Many major publishers have pulled their libraries since its official launch. While Stadia's available library continues to grow GFN's has shrunk considerably. It simply isn't safe to invest in a GFN library unless you own a PC capable of running those games well. If you do then you have better options available to you than using any of these services. The guarantee of free games added to your library each month coupled with official developer give Stadia a clear advantage here. Xcloud boasts approximately 100 games at launch. It is by no means a distant 4th here compared to previous categories we've covered. Many of these titles are first party offerings by Microsoft or low budget games. The offerings are not nearly as diverse in regards to third party developers AAA titles such as Stadia or Shadow. Don't expect to play the best Ubisoft, Rockstar, and others offer here. Also you won't see brand new titles featured here first unless it's a first party offering. If you are into Microsoft games then you might rate Xcloud higher against Stadia or GFN but it's an accessory service and not a main platform like Stadia which limits its potential.
Pricing and Plans: 1st: GFN 2nd: Stadia 3rd: Shadow 4th: Xcloud
GFN has the lowest cost of entry at around $5 (USD) a month for premium access while also offering limited free access. You also get to play PC titles you may already own while being able to get often low PC game level pricing on new editions to your library. Stadia comes in second here offering a premium subscription for approxiamately $10 a month and limited free access. Stadia also offers a number of free titles to add to your library each month contingent on maintaining your premium subscription. While some sales are available on this platform games on Stadia do tend to cost more than their PC counterparts or older console versions). Shadow is similiar to GFN but has no free access and costs approximately $12 dollars a month for it cheapest plan option with an annual commitment. Shadow offers additional storage and is rolling out upgraded hardware plans at a cost. Xcloud is bundle with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate which costs around $15 a month with no free access plan. While Xbox Game Pass (XGP) bundled with the service offers a wide selection of games many titles are depend on which platform you subscribe to (PC or Console) and all gamepass games or not available for play on Xcloud. It would be great if Microsoft offered Xcloud as a stand alone service in the future to reduce the cost of entry and I am in no way knocking XGP's value but if you are in the market solely for a game streaming service Xcloud currently has the highest cost of entry. All that being said outside of the focus of this review (game streaming services), if you are looking at overall value, Shadow stands out once again as it offers a powerful cloud workstation in addtional to a great PC gaming solution.
Accessibility (Ease of Use and Access Experience):
1st- Stadia 2nd- Xcloud 3rd- GFN 4th- Shadow
Stadia really shines here. The ability to quickly get into your games to play along with often drastically reduced load times really sets Stadia apart from its peers. This is especially apparent in MMOs where loading into different areas really impacts your overall experience. Not to mention the platform's integration with home assistants and smart devices. Stadia is a very distant first here. Xcloud also is fairly simple to access via the XGP app but takes considerably longer to get into a game than Stadia and doesn't feature vastly superior load times as many games don't seem optimized for the service. All games are preloaded though which firmly places it 2nd in this category behind stadia. GFN has many games preloaded but not all. You also have to contend with additional game service logins beyond the GFN interface and may be required to jump through some hoops to optimize your game settings if needed. Load time performances vary based on fhe game but falls far behind Stadia overall. Shadow requires you to pre-install all of the game services you require and games on them. It is a full featured PC and demands a higher level of attention to use. Loads times are great for a PC but don't expect anything exceptional compared to an optimized platform like Stadia. You also have to ensure you configure Windows correctly to support the services and games you want to use sometimes in spite of Shadows default configuration. It can be a real headache if you aren't tech savvy.
Well that is everything I have on the subject for now. It's been a while since I've cared about GFN as I let my subscription lapse shortly after nearly every major publisher pulled their titles reducing my usable library by 70% so some of my information may be out of date. I am also fairly new to Xcloud but given how hideous it looks and performs compared to Shadow or Stadia I doubt I will be spending a lot of time on it. I also feel that Stadia is in its infancy and has many features planned that will really set it apart. It will also be interesting to see how Sony's streaming sevice developes but as of yet I haven't had any experience with it. I have enjoyed many of Sony's first party games in the past so I do plan to try it out in the future. Hope this helps someone decide what service to invest in and what to steer clear of. It truly amazes me how unreliable the press is regarding covering these services. The best thing to do is try them for yourself.
*** Update : Network Information ***
I'm using an AT&T BGW210 running wired to a 1 Gb port to an Android TV, a 1Gb port for Chomecast Ultra, and get about 500+ Mbps up and down on a 5Ghz wifi link to my phone. The PC itself is connected through a wireless AC adapter and gets about 350 Mbps up and down to anywhere in my home. Mobile service is 4G through AT&T with approximately 50 Mbps download in the area around my home. Latency to the first hop on a speedtest is about 2-5 ms. For the mobile service it is 15-20 ms.

Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 2x16gb 3200mhz memory
GeForce 2070
Drivers and Bios are up to date.
Memory modules are in slots A2 and B2.

First I tried simply applying XMP 3200mhz and it did nothing at all, ran CPU-Z, the memory is still only running at 1066mhz. After attempting to use XMP, I took the time out to use the Ryzen DRAM Calculator with Thaiphoon Burner, went into BIOS, entered the appropriate values in the requested areas, saved changes, rebooted, annndddd nothing, it's almost as if the PC is ignoring any changes made in BIOs. I've been pulling my hair out over this, I'm a first time OC, any help would be appreciated.

2020.09.09 14:00 rusticgorilla Trump's Election Day vaccine "miracle"

Welcome, dear readers, to my semi-regular coronavirus roundup.
  • HOW TO SUPPORT: I know we are all facing unprecedented financial hardships right now. If you are in the position to support my work, I have a patreon, venmo, and a paypal set up. No pressure though, I will keep posting these pieces no matter what - paywalls suck.

Bob Woodward's new book reveals that Trump was aware that the coronavirus was dangerous and "more deadly than even your strenuous flus" even as he publicly downplayed the threat and failed to act to save lives. (article now updated with audio of Trump's interview)
"This is deadly stuff," Trump told Woodward on February 7.
In a series of interviews with Woodward, Trump revealed that he had a surprising level of detail about the threat of the virus earlier than previously known. "Pretty amazing," Trump told Woodward, adding that the coronavirus was maybe five times "more deadly" than the flu.
Trump also admitted to intentionally downplaying the threat:
"I wanted to always play it down," Trump told Woodward on March 19, even as he had declared a national emergency over the virus days earlier. "I still like playing it down, because I don't want to create a panic."

Election day vaccine

A group of nine leading pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies pledged on Tuesday to only seek approval for Covid-19 vaccines demonstrated to be safe and effective.
The pledge comes as Trump hypes the possibility of a vaccine before Election Day. His timeline has been pushed forward from “by the end of the year” to “before November 1st” and, most recently, “during the month of October.”
During his Labor Day press-briefing-turned-campaign-event, Trump said: "[It's] going to be done in a very short period of time -- could even have it during the month of October” (clip).
Trump went on to explicitly ties the vaccine to his re-election schedule: “We'll have the vaccine soon, maybe before a special date. You know what date I'm talking about” (clip).
Despite saying the quiet part out loud himself, the president tried to cast Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as the ones politicizing the vaccine process: “They’re going to make the vaccine into a negative… They’re saying ‘wow, Trump’s pulled this off, let’s disparage the vaccine.’ That’s so bad for this country, that’s so bad for the world to even say that and that’s what they’re saying” (clip). Unfortunately, many media outlets have portrayed the issue as a “both sides” argument.
Federal officials and health experts say Trump’s Election-oriented timeline is unlikely. NPR spoke with Moncef Slaoui, chief adviser for the administration's vaccine development program, who said he expects to have "enough vaccine to immunize the U.S. population by the middle of 2021.”
Case in point, development on the vaccine Trump was rumored to be betting on, the AstraZeneca-Oxford project, was put on hold due to a suspected serious adverse reaction in a participant.
But the point may not be to have a vaccine fully available to the public; Trump can simply claim the “deep state” is holding things up, blaming Biden/Harris for the pandemic under his watch. Furthermore, experts say there is no way our government and existing infrastructure will be ready to distribute, administer, and track doses by November. Health departments will also need an infusion of federal aid, a proposal that seems out of reach with a Republican-controlled Senate afraid to spend any more money during the pandemic.
...many health departments are so overwhelmed with the current costs of the pandemic — such as for testing and contact tracing — that they can’t reserve money for the vaccine work to come. Health departments will need to hire people to administer the vaccines and systems to track them, and pay for supplies such as protective medical masks, gowns and gloves, as well as warehouses and refrigerator space.

America alone

Meanwhile, the U.S. is backing down from the global fight against the pandemic, further enshrining Trump’s “America First” perspective into official policy. The Trump administration declined to join a global effort to develop, manufacture, and equitably distribute a coronavirus vaccine, in part because the World Health Organization is involved. U.S. allies including Japan, Germany, and the European Commission back the effort.
“The United States will continue to engage our international partners to ensure we defeat this virus, but we will not be constrained by multilateral organizations influenced by the corrupt World Health Organization and China,” said Judd Deere, a spokesman for the White House.
  • Further reading: The Trump administration said it won't pay more than $60 million in dues it owes to the World Health Organization.
The U.S. Agency for International Development, in charge of distributing global assistance related to the pandemic, is shutting down its only pandemic-focused task force. Other agency bureaus and divisions will take on its functions.

Sturgis comes home

South Dakota (+120%), Iowa (+81%), and North Dakota (+66%) have seen the largest 2-week increase in COVID-19 cases in the last two weeks, compared to the two weeks before.
These three states were also the “epicenter” of the Sturgis motorcycle rally last month. The event packed nearly 500,000 people into a small town in South Dakota, with rallygoers attending from - and returning to - all around the country. Photos and reports from Sturgis documented a startling lack of face masks and social distancing precautions.
According to a new study, over 250,000 coronavirus cases can be contributed to the rally. Assuming a cost of $46,000/case, the authors estimated the rally cost $12.2 billion. “This is enough to have paid each of the estimated 462,182 rally attendees $26,553.64 not to attend,” they write.
SD, IA, and ND do not have statewide face mask mandates. In fact, the Dakotas are two of just five states that do not allow local officials to require masks (the others are ID, MO, and OK). Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds has been told by the White House that the state’s outbreak is the steepest in the nation and urged officials to require mask-wearing statewide. Reynolds has yet to do so.

Alabama schools

Alabama has the fourth-most daily new cases per 100k people (after ND, SD, and IA) despite a statewide face mask order. The state has largely lifted all social distancing measures and has encouraged schools to reopen with in-person classes and sports. According to a NYT database, four-year universities in Alabama have over 4,000 coronavirus cases just weeks after opening.
The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa accounts for over 1,300 of the cases. Professors at the school were reportedly told by the administration not to talk about the outbreak - not even to inform students if someone in their class tests positive. The mayor of Tuscaloosa let bars near the university reopen on Tuesday.
  • Further reading: Alabama is starting to see a payoff from its mask mandate, in place since mid-July. New covid cases have been cut in half over the past month and coronavirus patients admitted to hospitals fell to the lowest level since June.
  • Remember the news articles praising Trump’s new “tone” on masks? During Monday’s press conference, Trump tried to bully a reporter into taking off his face mask when asking a question (clip). The reporter, Jeff Mason of Reuters, refused. Apparently, this annoyed Trump so much that he was still griping about it on Twitter Tuesday (clip).

Trump pushes for sports

After weeks of haranguing schools to bring back sports, Trump has reportedly offered Big Ten football teams access to the national government’s reserve of rapid COVID-19 tests.
The new, cheaper […] tests could be the key that unlocks the door back to the Horseshoe and stadiums around the conference. And the White House might be willing to assist in that effort by potentially designating part of its supply to the Big Ten after buying 150 million rapid tests last week from Abbott Laboratories.
The president is so attached to the idea of college football resuming that he is pushing the Big Ten conference to go ahead without the participation of three schools, blaming the governors of Michigan, Illinois, and Maryland for the conference’s vote to cancel.

Mitch plays games

The Republican-controlled Senate is planning on voting on a scaled-down coronavirus relief package as early as this week. The “skinny” bill is unlikely to become law as Democrats feel it does not adequately address the magnitude of the crisis the nation is facing. McConnell is hoping a Senate vote on coronavirus aid - any aid - will help vulnerable Republicans up for re-election.
The Republican bill is expected to include a federal unemployment benefit, another round of Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) funding, and more money for coronavirus testing and schools, as well as liability protections from lawsuits related to the virus. McConnell didn't release a price tag for the forthcoming bill, but it is expected to be at least $500 billion — half of the $1 trillion package Republicans previously unveiled in late July.
One of the reasons - perhaps the main reason - for the breakdown of relief bill negotiations may be new White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows. Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.), who served with Meadows on the Oversight Committee, told The Hill:
“Closing deals is not Mark Meadows’s strong suit. His whole track record is: blow it up… If you ask yourself what’s the difference between April and May, when we did reach big, broad bipartisan consensus, and today, the variable is Mark Meadows.”

Miscellaneous news

Lost in the Sauce was so long this week that I had to omit a couple of sections. I’ll include them here instead.
Immigration: Federal Judge Dolly Gee ordered DHS to cease using hotels as detention facilities for migrant children it seeks to expel from the border.
Gee said the use of hotels for detention purposes violates the Flores agreement because the locations lack sufficient oversight, state licenses to hold minors and standards for the care of young children. Minors have also faced a "woefully inadequate" process to seek the help of lawyers, who have been barred from entering the hotels, Gee added, citing declarations from attorneys who said they struggled to reach detained children.

Immigration: The Trump administration has drafted a proposal that would dramatically expand the number of people required to provide biometrics for their immigration applications, while also increasing the personal information the government can demand, such as eye scans, voice prints, DNA, and photographs for facial recognition.
Immigration: The Border Patrol made a dramatized YouTube video depicting a Spanish-speaking attacker stabbing and killing a man in a dark alley after escaping from U.S. agents - “a clip apparently created to dramatize President Trump’s depiction of migrants as fearsome criminals.” The agency removed the video following backlash.
Environment: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration opened an inquiry earlier this year into whether Trump political appointees illegally weakened rules meant to protect whales from oil industry seismic airgun blasting. Then, just as quietly, it halted the probe.
Environment: The Trump administration proposed a rule change that would make it easier to permit oil and gas drilling operations in national forests. The move comes as a watchdog report reveals the oil and gas industry has been allowed to pay far less than usual to the government for the right to drill on public lands under a controversial Trump administration coronavirus relief policy. Furthermore, the administration is seeking to fast track environmental reviews of dozens of major energy and infrastructure projects during the COVID-19 pandemic, including oil and gas drilling, hazardous fuel pipelines, wind farms, and highway projects in multiple states.
Environment: The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service issued a proposal that would allow the government to deny habitat protections for endangered animals and plants in areas that would see greater economic benefits from being developed — a change critics said could open lands to more energy development and other activities.

2020.09.08 06:55 XMG_gg Our plans for XMG FUSION in 2020 and beyond

Hi Reddit,
this thread aims to inform you about the current state of our best-selling product and about our future plans with this series.

Where are we today?

As you probably know, the top configuration of XMG FUSION 15 consists of the 6-core CPU Intel Core i7-9750H and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 with Max-Q Design. This is still a great combination with an outstanding price/performance ratio. But due to recent platform launches this year, customer often raise the question about our plans for a XMG FUSION 15 successor model.
Let's go over these platform launches first:
Comet Lake (10th Gen Intel Core)
Intel's CPU division announced the 10th Gen Core i7-10750H in April 2020. Since then we have refreshed our XMG CORE, NEO and PRO series, but XMG FUSION 15 is to date still shipped with Intel Core 9th Gen.
Tiger Lake (11th Gen Intel Core)
Now, at the beginning of September, Intel has launched the 11th generation of Intel Core CPUs with the codename “Tiger Lake”. The announced CPUs are operating in the low-voltage range that is optimized for thin-and-light Ultrabook-style laptop systems with a maximum of 4 cores and 8 threads. There has been no public announcement regarding the schedule and timeline of larger 6 and 8-core SKUs.
One day before Intel's Tiger Lake, NVIDIA introduced the GeForce RTX 3000 graphics cards (codenamed "Ampere"). However, these are initially only graphics cards for Desktop PCs. Related modules and cards for laptops have not been introduced yet.
The new GeForce RTX 3000 graphics cards are not to be confused with the Quadro RTX 3000 graphics card for CAD workstations. Quadro RTX 3000 is still based on the older “Turing” generation and is not related to the current “Ampere” launch.
It should also be noted that the newly introduced desktop graphics cards have a higher power consumption (and therefore also heat emission) than their respective predecessors. For example the previous GeForce RTX 2080 Ti consumed only up to 250 watts, the successor model GeForce RTX 3080 is now rated for 320 watts.

Our Plans for XMG FUSION 15

Let me summarize our current plans first:
Long story short:
  • XMG FUSION 15 will continue with i7-9750H, GTX 1660 Ti, RTX 2070 Max-Q
  • After having launched BIOS Undervolting in June 2020, we still have further performance-improving firmware updates in the pipeline for XMG FUSION 15. Stay tuned!
  • Instead of going for a minor refresh, we have opted for volume to bring you the current price (significantly lower than initial launch price)
  • There is an on-going internal discussion regarding adding an additional SKU with RTX 2070 SUPER Max-Q - not confirmed yet. See details below!
  • There are no plans for 10th Gen Intel Core (Comet Lake) in XMG FUSION 15
  • There are no appropriately high-powered SKUs (H-series) of 11th Gen Intel Core CPUs in the market yet
  • There is no clear timeline on NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3000 series in laptops yet
So while the timeline for Intel Tiger Lake (H series) and NVIDIA Ampere (for laptops) are not clear yet, we are however very clear on one thing: there will not be a GPU generation-upgrade without a corresponding CPU generation upgrade and vice versa.
In other words: no half-steps for XMG FUSION 15 - full steps only!
We can not yet say which generation will come first (Tiger Lake H or Ampere in Laptops) or how big the time gap will be between these two. However, it is already decided that a next-gen refresh model of XMG FUSION 15 will only be introduced once both of these platform transitions are complete. This will not happen this year - so you'd look at a release date not before some time in 2021.
(This estimate is in line with various roadmap information you can find from publicly available sources.)
Due to NDAs with our suppliers and partners we are not able to give a more precise estimates as to when these potential next-gen platforms are going to be available. Until further notice, the current version of XMG FUSION 15 is still going to be our outstanding laptop hero for a pretty long time, going well into 2021.

Why no 10th Gen Refresh?

XMG FUSION 15 has always been a model that aimed to find the sweet spot between performance, mobility and value. In order to hit these targets and to continue to benefit from Intel's outstanding logistical support, it is vital to reach for a certain economy of scale.
Intel Core 10th Gen has some minor architectural changes that requires a new BGA socket and in turn a whole new mainboard layout. Those changes are:
  • 10th gen now supports two external Thunderbolt controllers, not just one
    • Does not affect us, one Thunderbolt port per laptop ought to be enough for everyone
  • 10th gen now supports DisplayPort 1.4
    • Does not affect us, the NVIDIA GPU already supports DP 1.4
  • Platform preparation (additional voltage regulators) for new 8-core CPU's (and beyond?)
    • Does not affect us because XMG FUSION 15 is not designed for overclocking
Most of the advertised gains on 10th Gen are done in the new 8-core CPU i7-10875H which is basically a rebrand of the pre-existing i9-9980HK. This overclocking CPU pays for those 2 extra cores with a higher power consumption and higher thermals that are way beyond the advertised 45W TDP.
While we do carry the 8-core i7-10875H in XMG NEO and XMG PRO thanks to their additional thermal headroom (and chassis thickness/weight), this kind of overclocked CPU is not well-suited for a Thin&Light laptop like XMG FUSION 15. When it comes to overclocking existing technology, the law of diminishing returns does collect its tribute...
Conclusion: the benefits of 10th Gen Intel Core i7 do not outweigh the additional cost and production overhead from manufacturing a new mainboard. We decided to rather go for scale and to deliver a long-standing product that continues to receive our support and fine-tuning.

Will RTX 2070 SUPER Max-Q come?

NVIDIA's 2020 refresh (e.g. 2070 SUPER, 2080 SUPER) did indeed provide some technical advantage. Besides the eternal question of binning, the new Refreshed SKUs were confirmed to come with some new low-voltage GDDR6 video memory which does slightly increase the overall efficiency of the card.
While NVIDIA's refresh does provide some benefits with new GDDR6 memory, the GPU chips are nothing new: same architecture, same manufacturing process. New technologies like the well-received DLSS 2.0 are merely driver features that are rolled out to every RTX card, including the RTX 2070 Max-Q in XMG FUSION 15. So you're not missing out here. XMG FUSION 15 with RTX graphics remains a highly future-proof product.
Some of the advertised performance increases on the "SUPER" refreshed cards are purchased with a slightly increased power consumption, leading to additional thermal output.
XMG FUSION 15 aims for a sweet spot of thermals, performance, stability and longevity. During the product launch, it has been a highly contended topic that the GPU temperature target of XMG FUSION 15 is only at 75°C, where other gaming laptops allow up to 87°C. In essence, XMG FUSION 15 is supposed to run cooler and relatively quiet in order to provide a well-balanced long-term user experience.
When Intel started to offer they QC7 reference model with the RTX 2070 SUPER Max-Q for a considerably higher price, we were not to keen on adopting this SKU. However, drawing towards the end of the year, we are negotiating with Intel again to see of if we can find a price target and volume forecast that makes this SKU and win-win-win for Intel, XMG and our customers.
Conclusion: the decision regarding RTX 2070 SUPER Max-Q is still pending and not confirmed yet. Until further notice, RTX 2070 Max-Q (without 'SUPER') remains our top-of-the-line GPU for XMG FUSION 15.

When will we see a large-core version of Tiger Lake?

As written earlier, Intel recently launched the 11th generation of Intel Core CPUs with the codename “Tiger Lake” - but only with a limited number of SKUs that are all in the low-voltage range, optimized for thin-and-light Ultrabook-style laptop systems with a maximum of 4 cores and 8 threads. There has been no public announcement regarding the schedule and timeline of larger 6 and 8-core SKUs.
We find it reasonable to believe that large-core Tiger Lake SKUs for high-end Gaming and Workstations Laptops are still relatively far off and not to be expected to launch this year. This assumption is based on two key observations:
  • Intel’s previous 10nm debut codenamed “Ice Lake” was only available in low-voltage 15~25W SKUs as well. Therefor, the launch of the low-voltage Tiger Lake platform does not automatically imply any immediate follow-up launch of higher-powered SKUs with the same architecture and manufacturing process.
  • There is currently no official announcement regarding socketed 10nm desktop CPUs from Intel. The still unannounced upcoming “Rocket Lake” desktop platform for the LGA-1200 socket is assumed to still be built in the 14nm process.
As a Platinum member of the Intel Technology Provider program, XMG is privy to a reasonable amount of additional background information. However, due to our NDA with our partners and suppliers, we are not able to into further details regarding the potential timelines of future Tiger Lake releases.

Our long-term plans WITH INTEL

We are still highly committed to continue our partnership with Intel. With the amazing feedback we got from enthusiast communities here on Reddit and elsewhere, Intel is recognizing the value of XMG's partnership for R&D collaboration, bug-fixing and fine-tuning. Recent BIOS updates such as BIOS 0114 (Major Feature Update) or BIOS 0120 (Major Linux-compatibility Update) have been primarily driven by XMG's customer feedback and we will continue our efforts to provide the best-possible products to businesses and our end-customers.
XMG FUSION will also not be the only product family that comes out of this cooperation - that much we can promise already. We also have our eyes on high-end product segments that are traditionally driven by integrated graphics. More on this later.

Did you know?

XMG FUSION 15 has been awarded with the #2 spot in Workstations and Creator Laptops on
#1 spot goes to MacBook 16 which carries a much higher price tag while not even including basic content creator features like a full-size SD card reader. Well, OK then! ;-)

Thank you for your support!

If you're in the market for an outstanding high-performance laptop, we hope this announcement does help you to finalize your decision and we are looking forward to your feedback!

2020.09.02 18:59 waffle299 Still cannot get to splash screen with 1.03

I was wondering if anyone can help. I've emailed Guerrilla, but I imagine I'm one of a number of emails.
I know this isn't the normal channel for this sort of help. But I'm out of ideas.
I simply cannot get the game to run, or even get a splash screen. After a hundred or so attempts to start the game with various fixes applied, Steam has me at 2 minutes of game play.
I have followed all the guides I could find on fixing issues with HZD. I've scanned windows for corrupt files, applied the latest NVidia drivers, verified my CPU supports AVX, examined file permissions, added directories to the Users group, mucked around as instructed with NVidia settings, everything.
And absolutely nothing changes the error reported. No driver fix, no permission change, no Windows update. Nothing alters the error I'm getting.

2020.08.29 17:22 Parev00 Major instability for over 30 days - Cable modem readout?

For the past 40 days or so I've been having 3-5 hard downs per week in my network.
Configuration: I've got Cox HSI with Gigabit down and 35 up. I have an Arris TM3402A cable modem connected to an Eero pro. The Eero pro is connected to a Cisco SG11016NA switch. Two other Eeros are connected to the Cisco switch via Ethernet cables. I have a few other switches that are connected to the Cisco switch via wires as well. (The remote Eeros, while connected to the switch, do not have any wired devices attached to them.)
Issues: The remote Eeros have been going down hard showing red lights around 3-5 timea per week. Reboots are required to fix it for the Eeros, plus I usually reset the Cable modem too. In most cases, the Gateway Eero seems to stay up and shows a solid connection to the internet. This has led me to think it was an Eero problem. I detailed my troubleshooting here. In following up with Eero support, they suggested that it's an Internet problem with Cox. I'm happy to investigate this, but I am not sure what I'm looking at when I log into the modem.
Question: Is there anything here that seems like a problem? These are copy/pastes from the Arris cable modem status web pages.

2020.08.28 21:28 CyberChulo Upgrading 2015 Alienware Area 51 R2 Desktop Ram

Hello guys, I have some knowledge of PC tech but not sure about this one. I am looking to upgrade my ram from 8GB to 16GB. After trying to do some research, it shows my current ram as:
Slot "DIMM1", 4 GB, Speed "2133 MHz DIMM", Type "Unknown", Manufacturer "Samsung" Slot "DIMM2", 4 GB, Speed "2133 MHz DIMM", Type "Unknown", Manufacturer "Samsung"
Since I am now working from home, I've been noticing some microstutters or lag when doing rdp to my work computer and having multiple windows opened locally for personal stuff. I'd have to reboot once in a while to get rid of the stuttering and then it will eventually happen again later on during the day. When I checked my task manager for performance, it shows it eating up about 90% of my ram.
My question is, can I install another 2x 8GB ram in addition to what I already have? I noticed that the ram speed for those is not the same as 2133mhz
I looked at a Crucial Ballistix RGB 16GB Kit (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3600 and it is running at 3600mhz. I assume its not good to mix and match? Will it even work on my mother board with that speed?

Playback sample Google Widevine DRM encrypted media content on HMS device using Exoplayer
Find more ,please visit Devhub
CP are always eager to know which specific DRM type is supported on which HMS devices. They are also concerned about the security level of the DRM implementation. In this post let us discuss the following:
  1. Various DRM Solution(s) supported on the HMS devices
  2. Identify DRM types supported by HMS device, using DRMInfo tool / APK
  3. Download Exoplayer APK source code for HMS devices
  4. Build APK
  5. Validate sample content with and without DRM
Various DRM Solution(s) supported on HMS devices Digital Rights Management (DRM) is used to protect digital assets, viz. audio, video content, files, e-books, etc. The mainstream DRM Solution Providers for mobile domain are Google, Microsoft, Apple, ChinaDRM and others. The DRM client side solutions, known as Content Decryption Module (CDM), which are planned to be supported on HMS devices are as listed below.
  1. Clearkey CDM - free alternative to other commercial CDM solutions
  2. Google Widevine CDM - Google's content protection system for premium media, provided by default on Vanilla Android OS
  3. Microsoft PlayReady CDM - specifically authored to allow both Windows and non-Windows devices to play back movies
  4. Huawei Wiseplay CDM - based on ChinaDRM, shall be available on HMS devices, viz. Mate 30, Mate 30 Pro, P40, P40 Pro (with 990 Kirin chip)
Identify DRM types supported by HMS device, using DRMInfo tool DRMInfo APK available on Google PlayStore lists all the available DRM Solutions on a mobile device. As an example, the following devices show output with and without DRM support present, respectively. As of date, no HMS devices support PlayReady CDM.
Widevine Present
Widevine Not Present
It can also be seen in the above image with Widevine DRM supported that the Security Level is "L3", i.e. Software support for Widevine DRM.
Download Exoplayer APK source code for HMS devices
Clone the source code or download the project from the link below.[ Refer ]
Build APKBuild the APK file in Android Studio. The APK is generated in the below mentioned directory../hms-wiseplay-demo-exoplayer-mastedemos/main/buildout/outputs/apk/noExtensions/debug/demo-noExtensions-debug.apk Install the above APK on the HMS device.
Validate sample content with and without DRM Let us consider execution of the Exoplayer APK on 2 different devices, one with Widevine support and another without Widevine support. Also, let us try playback of Clearkey CDM content and Widevine CDM content on both these devices. This gives rise to the below set of 4 cases.
  1. Clearkey CDM content on device with Widevine DRM
  2. Widevine CDM content on device with Widevine DRM
  3. Clearkey CDM content on device without Widevine DRM
  4. Widevine CDM content on device without Widevine DRM
  5. Clearkey CDM content on device with Widevine DRM
  1. Widevine CDM content on device with Widevine DRM
  1. Clearkey CDM content on device without Widevine DRM
4. Widevine CDM content on device without Widevine DRM
CONCLUSION The ExoPlayer APK is a powerful tool to communicate the DRM capabilities on HMS devices to CP. The Exoplayer can further detect and playback Microsoft PlayReady DRM content as well. However, PlayReady DRM is not yet supported by HMS devices and hence, will be considered in future blogs, when it is available in future versions of Huawei devices.
